Previously, games were translated into Ukrainian mainly by Ukrainian developers. Most publishers believed that Ukrainians knew Russian and would choose it, so they could do without a separate localization. However, after the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, players have been increasingly asking game developers and publishers for Ukrainian localization. And the situation has indeed started to change a bit.

We’ve collected 30 games with Ukrainian localization that we think are popular and just plain interesting. This selection is subjective, so add your favorite games with Ukrainian language in the comments.

Liftoff: FPV Drone Racing

Liftoff: FPV Drone Racing is an FPV drone simulator. Here you can not only control drones but also create them from scratch. Players will be able to design their own aircraft and launch them. You can watch what’s happening through the built-in camera while flying over the locations recreated in the game. The game also has the ability to unite pilots via the network on the same map, as well as a useful addition called Slipstream. It adds additional actively moving objects to several maps, such as radio-controlled airplanes and wings, cars, and even a mining dump truck. Our military are training on this game.

Cossacks 3

Year of release: 2016 | Developer: GSC Game World | KULI | Steam

Cossacks 3 is a video game, a remake of the real-time strategy game Cossacks: European Wars” in 2001, developed by the Ukrainian company GSC Game World, which was the first in Ukraine to translate PC games into Russian and create multimedia encyclopedias. The main differences from the old game are modern graphics capabilities using 3D, updated models and textures, dynamic lighting and full support for user modifications.

Traditionally for the series, the player manages troops and the development of settlements to support them. The main gameplay takes place on rectangular maps with ponds, plains, rocks, forests, and other landscapes, initially hidden in the darkness of the “fog of war.”

To develop the settlement, workers are used, whom the player sends to build structures or extract resources. The player is offered a choice of several seventeenth-century nations: Austrians, French, English, Spanish, Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, Swedes, Prussians, Venetians, Turks, and Algerians. The basics of playing them are the same, the difference is in the design, unique troops and their capabilities.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a video game in the action RPG (role-play games) genre and in the cyberpunk style. The developers were inspired by the board game Cyberpunk 2020, which they based the plot on. The events take place in the fictional city of Knight City in 2077, when the protagonist Vee witnesses the murder of the head of a corporation. V is blamed for the murder and shot dead, but thanks to a mysterious chip, the hero survives and tries to punish the killers, while realizing that his mind is inhabited by the long-dead rock musician Johnny Silverhand.

The Ukrainian community has been fighting for the Ukrainian localization of the game for three years, and on September 26, 2023, it finally appeared along with the Phantom Liberty expansion pack. The localization for Ukraine has preserved the general tone of the original and added its own “highlights”, which will be nice to see. The localization was handled by UnlocTeam, a Ukrainian translation studio.

Ark: Survival Evolved

Ark: Survival Evolved is a multiplayer computer game in the genre of survival simulator. The game takes place either in the third or first person. You can move on foot or on a dinosaur. Players use firearms and create bases to protect themselves from other enemy players, mammals, dinosaurs, and other reptiles. The game has the ability to create a tribe, which allows players to form a group and work towards common goals. Tribal members can share buildings and creatures. In one of the updates, tribes were able to declare war on each other.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an isometric role-playing video game with a third-person view and turn-based combat mechanics. The project contains more than 170 hours of cinematic clips and three times as much cinematic dialog as all three Lord of the Rings novels combined, and a library of more than 600 spells and skills. To succeed in the game, you need to correctly place your characters, skillfully use the environment and correctly combine their abilities. A special feature of the game is the dice rolling system. Most actions are governed by the simplified rules of the Dungeons & Dragons board game. That is, the success of actions depends on the result of the dice roll.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released with a Ukrainian localization of 2 million words by SBT Localization. Some users didn’t like the localization very much: it was primarily about adapting terminology. However, many stood up for SBT Localization and the translators’ original solutions, as the Ukrainian localization of Baldur’s Gate 3 is still a significant event for both the Ukrainian gaming community and the game localization industry. This is probably the first time that a AAA game of this scale has received Ukrainian language support at release.

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is a 2023 horror detective adventure video game developed and published by Ukrainian studio Frogwares. The game is a remake of the 2007 version, part of the Sherlock Holmes Adventures series, and tells the story of the first major case of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. The god-obsessed cult of Eldritch is taking steps in the shadows to fulfill a prophecy that will change the world, and the duo of young detectives must thwart their plans.

The developers have dedicated their game to the Ukrainian people, who became victims of the Russian genocide. Frogwares’ message to the players has been translated into all available localization languages: “We are dedicating this game to all the soldiers, volunteers, everyone who helps them, and in general to all the people who hold our country on their shoulders. This game is an act of defiance against the chaos and horrors the enemy is trying to fill our lives with.” The game has received positive reviews since its release. The game features many Ukrainian elements: busts of Ivan Franko and Taras Shevchenko on the shelves, quotes from Ukrainian poets by the characters, and jokes about Russian military failures.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a first-person shooter role-playing video game with elements of survival horror and immersive sim (games that feature high interactivity and support for creative ways to pass), developed by the Ukrainian company GSC Game World. The release date is scheduled for September 5, 2024. The game is a continuation of the cult series of games “S.T.A.L.K.E.R.”, it will be the fourth game in the series.

The game takes place in the post-apocalyptic exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where, in addition to the 1986 accident, a second disaster occurred in 2006, as a result of which physical, chemical and biological processes in the area changed, and many anomalies, artifacts and mutant creatures appeared. The main character is a stalker nicknamed “Scythian”. The player’s decisions will affect the fate of the characters, local events, and the world in general. Ukrainian translation is announced at the level of text and voice.

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition is a science fiction video game, a survival simulator. The game is set in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, where the substance Chernobylite with previously unknown properties is spreading. Physicist Igor, in search of his wife, who disappeared 30 years ago, faces resistance from the military and mysterious creatures associated with Chernobyl and Igor’s own past.

Most of the gameplay revolves around exploring the exclusion zone, collecting supplies and tools, facing stalkers and hostile military personnel. The map of the game’s territories was developed based on 3D scanning and recreation of the Chernobyl zone.

Counter-Strike 2

Counter-Strike 2 is a multiplayer tactical first-person shooter game. It is the fifth game in the Counter-Strike series. Here, two teams compete to accomplish different tasks, depending on the selected game mode. Players are divided into two teams: counterterrorists and terrorists. Each game mode has different objectives and is divided into several rounds, and in between rounds, the player can purchase weapons and equipment to use. In most modes, the player has one life per round.

The game features major technical improvements compared to Global Offensive, including a switch from the Source game engine to Source 2, improved graphics, and a new client-server architecture. Many maps from Global Offensive have been updated to utilize Source 2 features, and some maps have been redesigned. The game has Ukrainian text localization.

Enshrouded

Year of release: 2024 | Developer: Keen Games | KULI | Steam

Enshrouded is a third-person action role-playing video game with survival elements. It supports up to 16 players simultaneously. The game takes place in Embervale, an open world that players can freely explore. The overworld is where players can build their bases, collect resources, and create new equipment. Players can also summon friendly non-player characters to their base, who will then provide players with new crafting recipes and quests. Players can also explore areas covered by a thick layer of fog called “The Shroud”. The game was released in early access on January 24, 2024 for Microsoft Windows. It is scheduled for release at the end of 2024 on Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and Series S. There is an official textual Ukrainian localization.

Lords of the Fallen

Year of release: 2023 | Developer: Hexworks | KULI | Steam

The Lords of the Fallen is a Polish role-playing video game in the soulslike genre (games defined by their similarity to the Souls series by Japanese company FromSoftware) with a third-person view. It is a sequel to the previous 2014 game by CI Games of the same name. The centuries of cruel tyranny of the god Adyr ended with the victory over the bloody tyrant. Unfortunately, centuries later, the process of Adyr’s rebirth begins. The main player, in the form of one of the Dark Crusaders, is destined to travel between the world of the living and the dead, defeating powerful creatures to overcome evil.

One of the features of Lords of the Fallen is a large-scale game world presented in two hypostases: Axiom, the realm of the living, and Umbral, the realm of the dead. The game has a character editor with customization features, as well as thirteen more playable classes to choose from, which have unique features. Ukrainian localization is available at the interface and subtitle levels.

Darkest Dungeon 2

Darkest Dungeon 2 is a role-playing video game, the sequel to Darkest Dungeon. Like its predecessor, this game is a role-playing video game with roguelike elements. It features several characters, each with unique skills. Players can equip these characters with equipment and combat items. The player controls a stagecoach, which is the main way to navigate the game world.

The ultimate goal is to reach the mountain, which is the source of the evil that has engulfed the world. While exploring the world, the player will encounter various interesting places and enemies. The battle in the game is turn-based. Traveling around the world, you can come across Temples where you can learn more about the background of the game’s characters.

The Invincible

The Invincible is a first-person action-adventure video game based on the science fiction novel Invincible by Stanislav Lem. The player controls the astrobiologist Jasna as she travels the planet Regis-3 in search of her missing crewmates. During the passage, the player explores the environment on foot or in vehicles and can interact with non-player characters. The game has a non-linear narrative that is influenced by the decisions made by the player, as well as several alternative endings. The developers have prepared a Ukrainian localization: there is a text and Ukrainian subtitles available.

MewnBase

Year of release: 2023 | Developer: Cairn4 | KULI | Steam

MewnBase is a space-themed game released by indie studio Cairn4 that focuses on resource management and exploration. Here, you have to play as a cat and complete various tasks to survive and leave the planet while exploring technologies that will help you progress in the game. It’s a cute base-building survival, two-dimensional exploration game. Users write that it is a game for relaxation. It has a clear development tree, good graphics and mood, good soundtrack, and Ukrainian language.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an open-world single-player role-playing video game. The video game is set in the Bohemian Kingdom of the early 14th century, a part of the Holy Roman Empire. The developers of the video game tried to recreate the look of clothing, weapons, architecture, and social system of medieval Bohemia as accurately as possible.

The game has a classless character leveling system, and the skills (horseback riding, alchemy, hunting) are upgraded depending on the actions of the protagonist. With the help of an extensive dialog system, the character’s reputation can change throughout the game. The video game has an official Ukrainian localization created by Shlyakbytraf. It is one of the best localizations available.

Ghostrunner 2

Year of release: 2023 | Developer: One More Level | KULI | Steam

Ghostrunner 2 is a first-person cyberpunk platformer video game. The game character Jack is very agile, able to overcome dangerous places by throwing, jumping, running on walls and sliding on them. He can also use a hook to move around the environment and use a “sensory enhancement” that briefly slows down time, allowing Jack to move through the air.

The first part of Ghostrunner was a success for the Polish studio One More Level. Some compared this project to Cyberpunk 2077 because of its atmosphere and style. The plot of Ghostrunner 2 takes place a year after the events of the first part. The sequel will have everything that fans loved about the original, plus new features in the gameplay, such as motorcycle rides. The game has Ukrainian text localization.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is an upcoming action-adventure video game. The story is set in the 10th century and tells the story of a warrior named Senua, who travels to Iceland to fight the Vikings who enslave her people and the giants who instead gave rise to draugr, which destroy the settlements. The gameplay features third-person control, through which the player controls Senua and explores locations where he fights enemies and solves puzzles.

Hades 2

Year of release: 2024 (expected) | Developer: Supergiant Games | Steam

In December 2023, Hades 2 topped the ranking of the most anticipated titles on the Steam game store. This is a direct sequel based on many elements of the first game, which belonged to the roguelike and Action/RPG genres. The plot of the game was based on ancient Greek mythology: the protagonist Zagrei, the son of Hades, wants to escape from the underworld of the dead and get to Mount Olympus; on his way, he is helped by the Olympic gods, who send gifts to Zagrei.

The upcoming game will allow players to live the story of Melina, a princess of the Underworld who is the sister of Zagrei, the protagonist of the previous part of the series, and the daughter of Hades. The description for Hades 2 says that the enchanting sequel will teach players how to use dark magic and send them to fight the titan of Time outside the Underworld. Immediately upon release, this game will have an official Ukrainian localization, which will be present in the form of interface and subtitles.

The Sinking City 2

The Sinking City 2 is an upcoming third-person survival and horror video game developed by Ukrainian company Frogwares and inspired by the works of Howard Lovecraft. It is a sequel to The Sinking City, which is set in the city of Arkham in the 1920s.

It is a limited open-world survival and horror game with a focus on combat and exploration, as well as an elevated water level that will change locations as you progress. The game will feature an inventory system that will allow the player to collect resources and use firearms and melee weapons against enemies. There will also be an investigation system that will allow you to solve the mysteries of Arkham.

Valheim

Year of release: 2021 | Developer: Iron Gate Studio | KULI | Steam

Valheim is an open-world survival simulation video game. It takes place in Valheim, a world where Vikings who have died in battle are brought back to prove themselves worthy of entering the halls of Valhalla. The player starts the journey from scratch and finds that he has to defeat evil in the face of six bosses. Guided only by his instincts and the raven’s clues, he must prepare to battle the sworn enemies of Odin himself.

“Valheim is the “tenth world” above the nine worlds described in Norse mythology. Players must explore a fantasy world filled with Norse mythology and Viking culture. Valheim has a cooperative mode, so exploring the Scandinavian world with a good friend will be even more interesting. The Ukrainian localization was created by Unlocteam, who adapted 8 different fonts of the project to the Cyrillic alphabet.

Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx is a virtual reality (VR) first-person shooter video game. The main character is Alyx Vance as she and her father Eli fight the occupation regime of the Combine. They are searching for a mysterious weapon called the Vault, hoping that it will help in the liberation of the planet. This game is VR-only, so it requires a helmet. IGN noted the deep detail of the game world and the ability to interact with objects. In particular, the reloading of weapons is realistic and consists of a sequence of actions. The shooter has an official textual translation into Ukrainian.

Timberborn

Timberborn is a city-planning simulator in which gamers control beavers instead of humans. According to the story, humanity turned the Earth into a desert and disappeared, but some animals managed to adapt and evolve. Beavers were the best at adapting to the new conditions, and so they became the rulers of the planet. Gameplay-wise, this is a classic urban planning simulator in which players need to arrange their settlement.

The Stanley Parable

The Stanley Parable is a video game belonging to the virtual novel and interactive fiction genres. In the first-person game, the player is only allowed to move and interact with a small number of objects, open doors, and press buttons.

Much of the story is told by a voiceover narrator who explains in the introduction that Stanley, an office worker, has spent his life pressing keys on demand on his computer screen, and when one day the command didn’t come, he found that none of his colleagues were there.

From this point on, the plot can develop non-linearly. As for the Ukrainian translation, this is one of the examples of how the Ukrainian community worked together. They created the localization themselves, contacted the developer, who then officially added the Ukrainian translation.

Dorfromantik

Dorfromantik is a puzzle-based urban planning video game. The game consists of placing hexagonal tiles that contain a combination of one or more of the following land uses: forest, wasteland, village, water, railroad, and field, with one land use on each side. The game starts with a wasteland and 40 new tiles to be placed in random order. The Guardian liked the atmosphere of this game. “The atmosphere is calming, your actions gently punctuated by a cheerful piano and synth soundtrack,” the description says. But Mezha.Media columnist Oleg Danylov believesthat Dorfromantik is exactly what the exhausted Ukrainian soul is asking for in the midst of the chaos of war. “You should definitely try it. There is a Ukrainian localization here. And it’s quite good,” Oleg noted.

Shatterline

Year of release: 2022 | Developer: Frag Lab LLC | KULI | Steam

Shatterline is a free-to-play first-person shooter by Frag Lab, a Ukrainian company that has been creating games since 2017. The characters here are eight operatives with unique features and abilities. The game has 27 unique weapons that can be customized. The game takes place in 2028, in the context of humanity’s war with Crystaline, an interstellar superorganism that transforms other organisms into its own kind. It is opposed by the Shellgard team, which consists, among other things, of immunes – people who are unfavorable to the alien “plague.” Among the humans, there are also strafers – fanatics who consider Crystaline a way to elevate themselves to the next stage of evolution. The Ukrainian dubbing was done by a team of professionals from Postmodern, a company that has long been working in the field of film dubbing and now has also taken up games.

American Truck Simulator

American Truck Simulator is a video game in the genre of a truck driver simulator with an economic component. In the game, players drive trucks and deliver goods that are transported by trailers to a designated location to be compensated for it with money and experience points. The payload must be delivered quickly to the destination within a given period of time and with the least amount of damage to the goods in order to receive the maximum amount of money and experience. Official Ukrainian localization is available.

Euro Truck Simulator 2

Year of release: 2012 | Developer: SCS Software | KULI | Steam

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is a video game in the genre of a truck driver simulator with elements of economic strategy. This is the second part of the Truck Simulator series. The developers tried to bring AI actions on the roads as close to reality as possible. In many cases, traffic behaves unexpectedly.

The game has temporary and permanent road signs that limit the speed limit. The maximum speed of all trucks in the game is technically limited to 90 km/h by default (can be disabled in the settings). In exceptional cases, it can increase when driving on descents and decrease when driving on ascents, with cruise control working, but on a flat road, the speed returns to the set speed. Time in the game is accelerated and differs from real time.

Subnautica

Subnautica is an open-world survival adventure video game. The game allows the player’s character to freely explore the ocean on a remote unknown planet, designated as planet 4546B, for which he has to constantly look for resources for survival.

In this struggle for survival, the player will also have to fight with various aquatic creatures inhabiting the ocean. This game allows you to collect resources, construct tools, bases and submarines, and interact with the planet’s wildlife. Most of the game takes place underwater, with two islands available for exploration.

This War of Mine

This War of Mine is a video game in the genre of side-scrolling survival simulator. The developers claim that when creating the game, they tried to accurately convey the suffering of ordinary citizens in wartime in their own city. The game takes place in the city of Pogoren, the capital of the fictional country of Graznavia, but the game was inspired by real events that took place during the siege of Sarajevo in 1992-1995.

However, the authors emphasize that they wanted to show events that could happen in any city. The Ukrainian localization for the game was created, along with localizations in other languages, using an online game translation system called Babel. This localization is semi-official and is not displayed on Steam, but you can add it through the main menu of the game. To do this, follow these steps:

▪ in the main menu, click on the Babel button located in the lower right corner of the screen; in version 4.0, where there is a choice between classic mode and story mode, you must first select classic mode and follow the previous instructions;

▪ click on Ukrainian in the list on the left; if it is not there, first click on the Refresh button located below the list;

▪ click on the Download button to the right of the list to download the Ukrainian localization; the Ukrainian language will appear in the settings; now you just need to return to the main menu and go to the settings and select the Ukrainian language.

Songs of Conquest

Songs of Conquest is a turn-based strategy game inspired by the classic turn-based strategy game of the 90s, Heroes of Might and Magic III. The player can play for one of 4 factions, expand their possessions and lead their troops into battle with the help of sorcerers – powerful wizard warlords. It is a mixture of turn-based strategy and adventure games.

The adventure component lies in the unique fantasy narrative that the game shows through a combination of two-dimensional pixel style, three-dimensional environments, and a deep lighting system. The game has a fantastic Ukrainian translation.
