Despite massive layoffs and studio closures, 2023 was a very successful year for players in terms of releases. There are hopes that 2024 will be no worse, and the first releases are just around the corner, so let’s take a look at what games we’ll be playing this year. The projects below are sorted by release date, with the same or unknown release date sorted alphabetically.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

A 2.5D metroidvania with a lot of references to the very first Prince of Persia (1989). The game is being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the same studio that gave us Rayman and is well versed in action/platformers. Although the author of the original Prince of Persia is not involved in the game’s creation, he supported the developers and said that this is “the Prince of Persia he has been dreaming of for so long.” We are already playing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and it’s really quite good.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered

The PlayStation 5 version of Last of Us Part II Remastered will feature updated graphics, audio commentary from the game’s creative director Neil Druckmann, and a new roguelike survival mode, No Return. We hope that after the release of the remaster on PlayStation 5, the game will be available on Windows PC sometime in 2024.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Tekken 8

The eighth installment of the popular fighting game and the first in the main series in the last 9 years. Old characters return in Tekken 8, but new fighters will also appear. The author of the series, Katsuhiro Harada, says that the new installment will reward those players who prefer an aggressive, active style rather than those who are on the defensive. In addition, the fighting game will get a new Heat system that changes the character’s set of punches and moves, as well as allows you to interrupt moves that have already started.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was supposed to be released back in 2022, but it seems that this action/adventure in the Batman universe is finally coming: Arkham universe will finally reach players. We play as four members of the Suicide Squad (Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, King Shark) and have to destroy the former members of the Justice League, who were brainwashed by the alien aggressor Brainiac. The gameplay looks interesting, but differs from other games in the series with a greater emphasis on ranged weapons. Co-op is planned. The game is being developed by Rocksteady studio, the creators of Batman: Arkham.
Helldivers 2

The sequel to the cooperative top-down shooter Helldivers (2015) from Arrowhead Game Studios has become a third-person shooter, but it hasn’t changed much. You are still in the company of three friends, destroying hordes of alien monsters, defending outposts, etc. Stratagems in the spirit of the first part will also return. Please note that in this game, “friendly fire” is constantly on, so you need to carefully plan your own actions and coordinate them with your partners.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is the story of two ghost hunters in North America during the colonization. A woman, Anthea Duarte, is mortally wounded in one of the missions and becomes a ghost herself. Her partner Red McWright tries to find a way to help his beloved. The game is being developed by Don’t Nod, a French developer that is known for creating slightly clumsy but very heartfelt projects, such as last year’s Jusant. If Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is as good as the studio’s previous action/RPGs, such as Remember Me (2013) or Vampyr (2018), that’s already good.
Skull and Bones

The long-suffering Skull and Bones is finally coming to release! 10 years in development is certainly not a joke, so we have some concerns that this pirate action/RPG is too much like an MMO, which has been stripped of a bunch of extra features and filled with grind. But still, it’s interesting what they did in the end, because we don’t have many pirated games in Ukraine.

An isometric turn-based narrative role-playing game on Unreal Engine 5 set in an alternate version of Warsaw in 1905. This world is teeming with mysterious forces and strange creatures called salutators. Their power is only accessible to thaumaturges, magicians who know how to tame such creatures. The authors of The Thaumaturge promise complete freedom of role-playing choice; manipulation of people, their characteristics and weaknesses; deep character customization; interesting combat techniques, etc. The game is published by Polish 11 bit studios.

Eleventh Hour Games’ Diablo IV and Path of Exile II competitor finally leaves Steam’s Early Access. Last Epoch is set in different epochs, so you can see the same locations in prehistoric times, in modern times, and in the future at the end of time. The game features 5 basic and 15 advanced classes, a tree with more than 120 skills, crafting, an interesting role-playing system, various locations, online multiplayer, and end-game content. Last Epoch will be released on PC only.
Pacific Drive

Sons of the Forest

The sequel to the popular horror/survival game The Forest (2014) from the Canadian studio Endnight Games. After only a year in the Early Access, Sons of the Forest has reached release and, judging by the number of reviews on Steam, players liked the game. As in the previous game, you have to survive on an island inhabited by cannibals, collect resources, build a house, create weapons, and so on. There is both solo and cooperative mode for 8 players. New mechanics include friendly NPCs, as well as the ability to get different endings that depend on the player’s actions.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

The second of the three parts into which the remake of Final Fantasy VII (1997) was divided. The first part, Final Fantasy VII Remake, was released in 2021, and the title and release date of the third part have not yet been disclosed. The events of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth take place immediately after the end of Final Fantasy VII Remake, when the characters leave the metropolis of Midgard. You control the same character, Cloud Strife. Given the enthusiastic response to Final Fantasy VII Remake, there’s no doubt that Rebirth will get its share of attention.
Homeworld 3

The long-awaited sequel to the Homeworld series from Blackbird Interactive, the studio behind Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak and Hardspace: Shipbreaker. Homeworld 3 takes place 100 years after the events of the previous games. According to the plot, Imogen S’Jet, the commander and human component of the Hygaran mothership, must lead her ship and crew to the mysterious Anomaly and defeat a new unknown enemy called the Incarnate. As in the previous installments, success in battle depends on skillful maneuvering in true 3D and using the properties of different ships. Among the innovations are massive wreckage that can be used to hide small ships and roguelike elements in the new cooperative mode.
Alone in the Dark

Alone in the Dark is a reimagining of the classic Alone in the Dark (1992). According to the authors, it is a love letter to the cult horror game of the 90s. The game takes place in the Gothic American South in the 1920s, and the gameplay is a kind of noir detective with elements of Lovecraftian horror. Alone in the Dark stars well-known actors Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) and David Harbour (Stranger Things).
Dragon’s Dogma 2

The open world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is four times bigger than the previous game in the series, and among the game mechanics there are some that were cut from the first part. According to the head of development Hideaki Itsuno, they were inspired by Grand Theft Auto V to create a world that you want to immerse yourself in. Dragon’s Dogma 2 uses the same RE Engine as all the latest Capcom games.

Action/RPG about samurai in the setting of 19th century Japan, from Team Ninja, the creators of Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, and Nioh series. This is the first open-world game for Team Ninja. In addition to melee weapons, heroes can use firearms of the corresponding period, and they will move around the world on horseback, with the help of a glider and a boarding hook. Rise of the Rōnin is a Sony PlayStation 5 exclusive.
South Park: Snow Day!

Formally, this is a sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth (2014) and South Park: The Fractured but Whole (2017), but in fact it is a completely different game in terms of gameplay. Unlike the 2.5D jRPGs with a turn-based combat system of the first installments (by the way, the first one was developed by Obsidian Entertainment), South Park: Snow Day! is a 3D action/RPG with an optional cooperative mode. In the story, snow has fallen in South Park, school has been canceled, and Cartman, Stan, Kenny, Kyle, and a player in the role of a Newcomer have to save the city from the endless winter.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

Hopefully, nothing else will prevent S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 from being released, and we will all get a chance to return to the Zone after years of waiting. As a reminder, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 uses Unreal Engine 5, will be a temporary Microsoft exclusive, and will be released on Xbox/PC Game Pass on the first day. The game will have a non-linear storyline lasting at least 40 hours and 4 different endings.
Still Wakes the Deep

Still Wakes the Deep is a narrative horror from the British studio The Chinese Room, the authors of Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. The game takes place in 1975 on an offshore oil platform in the North Sea. During a storm, the platform has an accident, there is no communication, and it seems that the oil workers have awakened something not very pleasant in the depths of the ocean. The player’s task is to survive and find a way to leave the platform.
Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown

The first game in the Test Drive series in 12 years and a return to the Test Drive Unlimited formula. The events of Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown take place in Hong Kong, recreated on a 1:1 scale. The game will feature more than 600 km of roads and off-road missions, races, transport missions, convoys, the ability to just drive around the city, car customization, and much more. The game is being developed by the French KT Racing/Kylotonn, which has been creating official WRC games for the last 10 years.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

The sequel to the legendary but financially unsuccessful 2004 role-playing game, which was supposed to be released in 2020, has a chance to finally reach players this year. The game lost all its key developers, changed studios, and in 2023 received a new plot, a new protagonist, new game mechanics, and more. It seems that the only thing left of the game that was announced in 2019 is Seattle and a bunch of art. The new studio, which is the British The Chinese Room (Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture), is reworking everything else to fit its own vision of the project. Something tells us that there’s also Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is going to get another postponement, although it would be nice to be wrong.

The cardinal difference of Ara: History Untold is the simultaneous moves of all players, both living and AI, which sometimes leads to unexpected consequences. In addition, we should pay attention to the battles, which, at least visually, resemble tactical battles from the Total Wars series.

A new fantasy RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. In the game’s plot, the hero, as an envoy of the empire, arrives in a remote region to investigate the source of a mystical disease. Avowed seems to be a kind of fantasy version of The Outer Worlds (2019) with magic instead of technology and swords instead of blasters. But it’s Obsidian, who have been working on role-playing games for years, so it should be interesting. As a reminder, since 2018 Obsidian has been a part of Microsoft, so the game will immediately appear in Xbox/PC Game Pass.

A turn-based post-apocalyptic role-playing game with complex dialogues and a moral compass, the authors of which were inspired by such hits as Fallout, Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment and Disco Elysium. Broken Roads is set in Western Australia, so there will be something from Mad Max here as well. Broken Roads was supposed to be released in November of 2023, then moved to early 2024, but after the unexpected closure of the game’s publisher Versus Evil, the game’s release date remains uncertain.

An open-world action/RPG with Dark Souls touches from New Zealand studio A44, the authors of the Ashen action/RPG. The authors describe Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn as a cross between God of War and Elden Ring, and the combat system resembles a dance. The main character travels in the company of a mystical fox and uses a battle axe and a flintlock pistol. Her task is to save humanity by killing all the gods.

It seems this time it’s not about physical survival, but about political survival, but as we all know, unfortunately, politics directly affects the chances of survival.

This time, you will not play as an arrogant colonist who came to tame the New World, but rather as an aboriginal people who were forcibly taken to the Old World, dying of plague, suffering from warfare and political intrigue.

The sequel to the action/adventure Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (2017), which collected a bunch of awards, including for the artistry of the lead actress and innovative sound design. If Senua’s Sacrifice was once an experimental indie project within Ninja Theory, then Senua’s Saga: Hellblade is the largest and most expensive Ninja Theory project. Hellblade II will be similar in gameplay to the previous part, but the game will have a new, more dynamic and realistic combat system. The role of Senua is once again played by Melina Jurgens, and this time the game is set in Iceland.

The ambitious space saga from Ubisoft/Massive Entertainment is still aiming for a 2024 release, but something tells us that a project of this scale will most likely not be released on time. An open world, a dozen different planets, space battles, stealth, a role-playing system, transportation on the surface of planets, a bunch of cinematic inserts… Star Wars Outlaws looks really interesting and has a chance to really become a new word in Star Wars gaming, but let’s remember Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and throw in at least another year of development.

The new sci-fi game from the authors of Frostpunk and This War of Mine is an action/adventure about survival on another planet in the company of many alternative versions of yourself. The game’s protagonist, Jan Dolski, is stuck on a remote planet and in order to survive and return home, he creates alters, clones of himself with different personalities, skills, habits, etc. According to the authors, The Alters is a game about those moments that change you. It’s about simple decisions that are made in a split second but affect the rest of your life.
The Wolf Among Us 2

In fact, it is unknown not only whether The Wolf Among Us 2 will be released in 2024, but whether this game will be released at all. The sequel to Telltale Games’ best Advent adventure, announced four years ago, may suffer from layoffs that began at Telltale after the unsatisfactory sales results of The Expanse: A Telltale Series. It looks like the studio may go bankrupt for the second time. In addition, Bill Willingham, the author of the original Fables comic book, transferred the series to the public domain in September 2023, which may also affect the project. But technically, The Wolf Among Us 2 is still in development and should be released in 2024, so fingers crossed.
