Detroit has launched America’s first road with wireless charging for electric vehicles. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the city of Detroit have opened a segment of 14th Street in central Michigan’s Detroit as an “innovative mobility district.” This was reported by Axios.

The Israeli startup Electreon has installed a wireless charging station on a 400-meter stretch of road. The road will be used to test and improve wireless charging technology in a real-world environment. After testing, it will be made available to the public across America in the next few years.

In order to use this charging, electric vehicles must be equipped with a special approved receiver that will charge the car both when stopped and on the move.

Such receivers will initially cost about $3500, but Electreon plans to reduce the cost to $1500 in the future.

Detroit authorities said that in the future they plan to place such chargers at traffic lights and bus stops to maximize their benefits.
