AMD is counting on Samsung’s production capacity

AMD is obviously trying to diversify the production of its processors. For some time, the “reds” completely relied on the Taiwanese silicon giant – TSMC, but the possibilities of the latter are not limitless. Factories producing 4nm wafers are loaded with orders from Apple and Qualcomm, so apparently AMD can’t get the required number of crystals according to its requests. It can be assumed that this is one of the reasons for the delay in the sale of laptops based on the new Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix”, which are manufactured precisely according to the norms of 4 nm.

There are not many alternative manufacturers that can potentially meet the demand for chips made using 4-nanometer technology. Of course, first of all, we are talking about Samsung. The Korean company recently announced its readiness to start mass production of second- and third-generation 4nm chips. The initial revision of SF4E had some problems that prevented it from achieving the target of yielding suitable crystals from the wafer. After proper debugging and testing, Samsung managed to improve performance, reduce power consumption and even increase the density of the element layout.

According to insiders, the yield of suitable chips is about 60% compared to TSMC’s 70-80%, but the Korean manufacturer is rapidly improving these indicators, so statements about the readiness to start mass production based on the improved 4nm technical process have a suitable basis.

Therefore, it is not surprising that AMD is counting on Samsung’s capabilities. At most, according to some sources, the companies already have certain agreements. However, we will wait for official statements.
