Driverless Cruise taxi stopped by San-Francisco police tries to “bolt off”
Cruise self-driving cars have been operating as taxis in San Francisco since February. There have been no problems with them so far, but last weekend one of the cars responded strangely to a police request to stop.
A video of the situation was posted on April 2 but it became popular after it was shared on Twitter on April 10 by Seth Weintraub. You can see how at first the car obediently stops at the request of the police, but then moves and moves a little further down the street. The policemen, embarrassed by the situation, catch up with the “offender”. They probably stopped the taxi because the lights were off.
The day after the video was published, Cruise commented on the situation. The company explained that the car obeyed the police and moved to the nearest safe place to park.
“An officer contacted Cruise personnel and no citation was issued. We work closely with the SFPD on how to interact with our vehicles, including a dedicated phone number for them to call in situations like this,” the company said.
Cruise driverless taxis are becoming more common on the streets of San Francisco, so it’s likely to happen again. The company even made a video on how to properly interact with their cars.
