Unity lays off 25% of employees as part of the company’s “relaunch”

Unity Software is laying off 25% of the company’s employees, which is 1800 people. The new layoffs are part of the company’s “restart.” The announcement was made in an internal memorandum on Monday, according to Yahoo News.

The layoffs are scheduled to be completed by the end of March and will include farewells to employees from all teams, regions and business lines.

CEO Jim Whitehurst announced the relaunch of the companies back in November, and on Monday he wrote the following in a letter to employees:

“We are … reducing the number of things we are doing in order to focus on our core business and drive our long-term success and profitability.”

It is not yet known whether the 1800 people are entirely new layoffs or whether they also include employees who were notified of their layoffs at the end of last year. The company has not yet commented on the news.

As a reminder, Unity has created and maintains one of the most popular multi-platform game engines used by millions of indie developers around the world. In September 2023, due to proposed changes to the license policy, Unity caused outrage among developers, some of whom decided to change the engines of their own projects. After the scandal, the company was left by CEO John Riccitello, and later it was announced that Unity was going to restructure and may have to make layoffs.
