In September 2022, hackers leaked a very early GTA VI gameplay. The game was expected to be announced in the spring of 2023, and later it was reported that GTA VI will be released in 2024.

The previous installment of the series, Grand Theft Auto V, was released in 2013 and sold 185 million copies, making it the second best-selling game in history after Minecraft. Rockstar Games’ latest major game, Red Dead Redemption 2, was released in 2018 and has sold 55 million copies.
