Iranian Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, deputy commander of the Islamic Republic’s army (and former navy commander), together with the Imam Khomeini University of Marine Sciences and Technology, demonstrated what he calls “the first product of the quantum processing algorithm.” As it turned out, it’s actually an inexpensive off-the-shelf board from the American company Digilent, which can be purchased on Amazon. According to Iranian officials, this “quantum computer component” will be used by the military to “counter navigation deception in detecting surface vessels using the quantum algorithms.”

It didn’t take long for Internet users to figure out that the photo was of an ordinary ARM-based FPGA SoC board for ZedBoard developers from the American company Digilent. It has 512 MB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9. And no quantum computer components. The cost of the board on Amazon is $589, and one can only imagine how much Iranian money was spent on the “development” of this hi-tech product.
