YouTube has significantly lowered the requirements for video monetization

YouTube has announced changes to its policy for monetizing videos through the YouTube Partner Program. In particular, the requirements for channels have become significantly lower than they were before.

Starting today, the requirements for creators are as follows:

  • have 500 followers
  • make a minimum of 3 public video uploads within the last 90 days
  • have 3,000 hours of video views in the last year and/or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days

Previously, YouTube required channels to have at least 1,000 subscribers, 4,000 hours of video views, and/or 10 million Shorts views.

After gaining access to the YouTube Partner Program, creators are also exposed to tools such as sponsorships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks. In addition, they can promote their products through YouTube Shopping (currently only available in the US for channels with 20,000 subscribers or more).

Creators in the US, UK, Canada, Taiwan and South Korea will be the first to see the changes. They will eventually become available in all countries where the YouTube Partner Program operates.
