LG is discontinuing the production of all Blu-ray players, including the latest UBK80 and UBK90, which were introduced in 2018. The company’s players will be available for purchase until stocks run out, FlatPanelsHD writes.

Despite this statement, a representative of LG Korea noted in a comment that this is not the final position. If the demand for Blu-ray players increases, the company may resume their production. However, there are currently no such plans, and everything depends on the market.

This is not the first company to abandon the optical disc market. Earlier, Disney stopped selling its movies on DVD and Blu-ray discs, and Sony also announced plans to stop producing recordable discs.

In addition, Sony and Microsoft are already actively releasing versions of their PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles without Blu-ray drives. There are concerns among players that in the future companies may completely abandon games on disks in favor of digital versions. Although Xbox boss Phil Spencer assures that there are no such plans yet.

Other major tech giants like Samsung and OPPO have also exited the market. Both companies announced the end of production of optical players in 2019.
