Startup Curio works on AI toys that can talk to children

The startup Curio is working on an interesting development. These are toys with artificial intelligence that will be capable of a long interactive conversation, writes The Washington Post.

It is a whole line of toys that will use OpenAI technology. The first of them is a plush Grok rocket that will talk to a child in the voice of Canadian singer Claire Boucher, who performs under the pseudonym Grimes.

The singer is also known for being in a relationship with billionaire Elon Musk, and the couple has three children. Grimes became an investor and advisor at Curio. It is not yet clear whether these AI toys will be considered educational devices. However, it is known that parents will be able to prohibit the toy from using certain topics or words.

In addition, parents will be able to receive a transcript of the toy’s conversations with their child in a special app for appropriate control. The developers assure that they will not collect or store voice data.

Grok is already available for pre-order at $99. However, the toy is promised to ship only early next year.

Investors are not yet assessing the impact of such toys, but the industry is expected to grow in the coming years. According to Contrive Datum Insights, the AI toy market could reach $35.11 billion by 2030.
