Google has announced an update to Google Maps and is adding artificial intelligence tools to the service. Their goal is to make it easier for users to search, explore the environment, and get to their destination, writes TechCrunch.
For example, the tech giant is updating its map search function. Users will now be able to see photos of the objects they are looking for. The proposed results will be based on the analysis of other people’s photos, using AI and advanced image recognition models.
This week, the new search method is launched in France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US. Google plans to expand it to more countries in the future.
Another update will help you find events and dining options in a particular location. To do this, enter the query “Things to do in” and add a location to see possible offers. Then you should tap on the selected options to get to them immediately or save them for later. This update will be available for Android and iOS worldwide in the coming weeks.
Google also announced that soon the Maps navigation interface will more accurately reflect the environment. For example, users will see more realistic buildings to better navigate the terrain. The company also promises improved information about traffic lanes on the roads. These updates will be rolled out in the coming months in 12 countries.
In the coming months, Google will also introduce several other features for drivers. For example, in the United States, users will be able to check whether there are HOV lanes on their way, i.e. lanes for vehicles with a driver and at least one passenger. And in Europe, the company will expand AI-based speed limit information to 20 countries.
Besides, electric car owners will see additional information about charging stations displayed on the map. This will include data on the compatibility of the charger, as well as information on when it was last used.
Among other things, Google is expanding its Imersive View for Routes feature, which allows travelers to see their upcoming trip, to more cities. The AI-powered feature is now available in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Paris, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tokyo, and Venice.
Google is also launching Lens in Maps, formerly known as Search with Live View, for more than 50 new cities, including Austin, Las Vegas, Rome, São Paulo, and Taipei. The feature uses AI and augmented reality to make it easier to find information about nearby ATMs, transportation stations, restaurants, and other objects.
