Australia fines Elon Musk’s X platform for more than $380 thousand
In Australia, the Electronic Security Commission has fined Elon Musk’s X platform for improper disclosure of information about how the social network is dealing with child abuse content, writes CNBC.
The fine amounts to more than $380 thousand. Now the company must pay the specified amount within 28 days or provide information on the fight against the specified content.
“Twitter/X has stated publicly that tackling child sexual exploitation is the number 1 priority for the company, but it can’t just be empty talk, we need to see words backed up with tangible action,” Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said in a statement.
Australia imposed a fine on X under the Internet Safety legislation passed in 2021. It requires online service providers to report on how they deal with child abuse content. Companies can be held liable for failing to comply with the reporting requirement.
The Australian office sent the relevant memos to tech companies back in February. The document contained a list of questions about countering content that had to be answered. According to the commissioner, X did not answer many questions and left “some sections completely blank.”
