OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is exploring the possibility of creating its own chips for artificial intelligence, reports Reuters.

According to people familiar with the matter, the company has already started evaluating a potential acquisition target.

The company does not have a ready-made solution yet. But at least since last year, it has been discussing various options for solving the problem of the shortage of expensive chips. These options included closer cooperation with other manufacturers, such as NVIDIA, diversification of suppliers beyond NVIDIA, or creating its own chip.

It is not yet clear whether OpenAI will move forward with its plan to create its own chip, but if it does, such intentions will require large investments. According to industry experts, it could be hundreds of millions of dollars a year. But even this does not guarantee the company’s success in this area.

As a reminder, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made the acquisition of more AI chips a top priority for the company. He publicly complained about their shortage in the market dominated by the American giant NVIDIA.
