Samsung Galaxy S24 may receive advanced M13 display technology, Apple smartphones will switch to it with the release of iPhone 16

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 flagships will feature advanced display technology that will later be used by Apple with the release of the iPhone 16. According to the South Korean edition of Chosun, industry insiders are confident that the S24 series will be the first smartphones to debut with M13 OLED displays, as reported by TechRadar.

The letter M in M13 refers to the quality of the materials used in the OLED panel, and the number indicates the generation of the technology. More advanced materials (as well as their configuration within the panel and the presence of a polarizer) help improve transmittance efficiency (i.e., the efficiency of the display’s output signal) and reduce power consumption.

Smartphones such as the 2022 Samsung Galaxy Fold4, Galaxy Flip4 (along with this year’s Fold5 and Flip5), and Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max use Samsung Display’s M12 OLED panels. Surprisingly enough, this year’s Galaxy S23 Ultra uses a modified M11 panel.

The insider report also expects the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max to be equipped with M12 panels, while the M13 technology designed for the Galaxy S24 series is not expected to debut on Apple smartphones until the iPhone 16 lineup arrives next year.

In addition to the more advanced screen technology, insider reports suggest that we may finally see a jump in the Galaxy S24’s base RAM capacity.

With the Galaxy S20 series, Samsung set the base amount of RAM on its devices at 8 GB, with the S20 and S20 Plus coming with 8 GB and the Galaxy S20 Ultra available with 12 GB of RAM (or 16 GB in the case of the 512 GB model).

Now the bar can be raised to 12GB for the Galaxy S24 and 16GB for the S24 Ultra. Samsung’s current flagship smartphones already use some of the fastest and most efficient memory chips (LPDDR5x) and drives (UFS 4.0) available on the mobile market.

Thus, the increase in RAM will give users the confidence that their smartphone will be just as fast with future operating system updates. As a reminder, Samsung offers 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates.
