The European Union has supported strict precautionary measures that will prohibit dangerous cases of using artificial intelligence. This is reported by The Verge.

It is about the draft EU Law on AI, which was approved by two key committees: the Internal Market Committee and the Civil Liberties Committee.

These include prohibitions on mass facial recognition programs in public places and predictive policing algorithms that try to identify future offenders using personal data. The regulation also requires the creation of a public database of “high-risk” AI systems deployed by public and government authorities so that EU citizens can be informed about when and how they are being affected by this technology.

In general, they worked on the draft law on AI for a long time. But increased interest in generative AI tools this year forced last-minute changes to the document. And although the project can still be adjusted, its current version is evaluated positively.

For example, Sarah Chander, senior policy adviser at European Digital Rights, believes that all of this will have global implications. The European Union is a significant market, and technology companies often follow EU regulations on a global scale.

After approval by EU parliamentary committees, the document will be put to a plenary vote next month. After that, a series of negotiations is expected with the participation of EU member states and the bloc’s regulatory bodies. The AI law should be adopted by spring 2024.

We will remind that Elon Musk plans to launch his own generative artificial intelligence TruthGPT, which, according to the entrepreneur’s plans, should become a safer version of existing chatbots.
