As of January 1, 2023, the population of Ukraine was 28-34 million

The Institute of Demography and Social Research assumes that as of January 1, 2023, the population of Ukraine was 28-34 million, writes Ukrinform.

“We tried to estimate the population on January 1, 2023, within the borders of the country on January 1, 2022 (that is, without Crimea and the occupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions – ed. note). We got a variation from 28 to 34 million people. The lion’s share of this variation is due to the fact that we do not understand what is happening with migration,” Ella Libanova, director of the M. V. Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, said.

And if it is still possible to count Ukrainians who left for European countries, then the number of those who crossed the border with Russia independently or against their will is almost impossible to determine. It is about 3 million Ukrainians who left or were deported to Russia.

At the same time, according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of Ukrainians who left for European countries after the beginning of the full-scale invasion is about 8 million people.

We remind that the only census of the population of Ukraine during the time of independence was conducted in December 2001. The last census during the times of the USSR was held in January 1989.

As for forecasts, the Institute of Demography assumes that on January 1, 2030, the population of Ukraine will range from 24 million to 32 million.
