The Switch has become the third best-selling console of all time, overtaking the Game Boy and the PlayStation 4. Nintendo said that by the end of 2022, 122.55 million consoles had been sold, so from now on, only two gaming gadgets are ahead – the DS and the PlayStation 2.

However, it should be noted that 14.91 million Switches were sold between April and December 2022, as opposed to 18.95 million a year earlier. Revenue for the fiscal year ending in March fell 5.6%. Game sales decreased by 4%. As a result, the company lowered its forecast for console sales for the current financial year from 19 million to 18 million, and games – from 210 million to 205 million.

Nintendo explains the deterioration of indicators due to a shortage of semiconductors, and the lack of consoles, in turn, affected game sales. At the same time, this did not prevent Sony from setting a new sales record for the PlayStation 5, selling 7.1 million consoles last quarter, which is 82% more than the same period in 2021.

Rather, Nintendo’s problems are related to the Switch itself, which will be six years old this spring. The company said last year that the transition to next-gen consoles is a “primary goal for us,” so it may soon become a more pressing task. It will be interesting to see if the Switch can become the most popular console of all time, but for that Nintendo needs to sell another 33 million units to overtake the PlayStation 2.
