In order to support the energy system of Ukraine in the event of a shortage of generating capacity, the state energy trader JSC Energy Company of Ukraine carried out the first test supply of electricity from Slovakia. The actual import of 1 MW took place on October 27, 2022.

JSC Energy Company of Ukraine received the right to import as a result of an open auction for access to interstate power grids, which was held on October 25, 2022 by the operator of the national transmission system of NPC Ukrenergo.

“As a result of rocket attacks and damage to the energy infrastructure, the risks of a sustainable heating period have increased significantly. As a government trader, we are looking for opportunities and tools to reduce these risks. Carrying out test deliveries is part of this work. The technical possibility to import electricity from Europe to Ukraine is another tool for stabilizing the operation of our energy system. We must be ready for its implementation,” said Vitaliy Butenko, general director of the JSC.

We will remind you that on February 24, 2022, Ukraine and Moldova, as planned in advance, disconnected from the Unified Electric Power System of the CIS countries, which helped protect our country’s power grid at the beginning of a full-scale war. On March 16, 2022, the power grids of Ukraine and Moldova were synchronized with the electrical network of continental Europe. This, among other things, allowed Ukraine to resume electricity exports to Europe.

According to ExPro Consulting from March to August 2022, Ukraine exported 1,335,717 MWh of electricity in four directions – Poland, Moldova, Romania and Slovakia.

Ukraine made a test import of electricity from Europe

In general, as written by Slovo i Dilo in 2014-2022, the sale of electricity accounted for a significant share of Ukrainian exports. At the same time, while selling electricity to European countries, Ukraine purchased electricity from CIS countries, including Russia. At the same time, in 2016-2018, imports from Russia almost stopped and resumed in large volumes in 2019-2021.

Ukraine made a test import of electricity from Europe

After the latest missile strikes by Russian aggressors on Ukraine’s energy system, we hardly have anything to export. But the import of electricity, which was protested by JSC Energy Company of Ukraine, will help protect the Ukrainian electricity grid if the attacks on the energy infrastructure continue.

Use electricity wisely, turn off unnecessary appliances and unnecessary lighting, help the country in difficult times! It won’t be easy, but Ukraine will still win!
