MediaTek has presented an updated mid-range processor — Dimensity 1080. Compared to Dimensity 920, the new chip has improved performance, energy efficiency, and improved camera work.

The Dimensity 1080 has two high-performance Cortex-A78 cores, clocked at 2.6 GHz, instead of 2.5 like its predecessor. Also, the same Mali-G68 video is used here, and the chip uses the same 6-nanometer process. As GSMArena notes, you shouldn’t expect significant improvements in benchmarks.

The Dimensity 1080 supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, has the familiar AI processing unit (APU), and supports HyperEngine 3.0.

And the most noticeable improvement was support for 200-megapixel cameras when previously these processors could only work with a maximum of 108 MP. Additionally, there is an Imagiq ISP image processing unit. Support for HDR video processing in up to 4K resolution is also noted.

The first devices with the new chip are expected in the fourth quarter of 2022.
