There are already over 39,000 electric cars in Ukraine, and Chinese brands are more popular than Tesla and Nissan
Even before the start of a full-scale war and the fuel crisis caused by the destruction of infrastructure, the number of electric cars was steadily increasing in Ukraine. As Forbes found out that on August 1, 39,233 electric cars were registered in Ukraine.
In seven months of 2022, according to Auto Consulting, 5,914 electric cars were registered in Ukraine – 34% more than a year before. The share of new electric cars increased to 30% of the total number of registrations. Last year – 12%.
According to the results of January-July, electric cars overcame the psychological milestone of 5% of sales on the market of new cars, and in July 11%, – says the general director of Auto Consulting Oleh Omelnytskyi. He expects a rapid increase in the popularity of electric cars.
For comparison: at the end of July 2022, there were 50,679 “green” cars on Polish roads, according to data from the Polish Association of the Automotive Industry. 49% of them are fully electric (BEV), the rest are hybrids. In total, 4.16 million electric cars were sold in the world in six months of 2022. China accounted for 57% of sales, Europe for 27%, and the United States for 10%.
The most popular passenger electric car in Ukraine in July remains the Nissan Leaf (287 cars). Volkswagen e-Golf (151 units) takes the second place, Volkswagen ID.4 takes the third (132 units). Renault Zoe (112 units) and Tesla Model 3 (75 units) made it to the five in July. The segment of Chinese electric cars is growing noticeably. Made in China, the Volkswagen ID.4 priced at $40,000 is the best-selling new electric car in Ukraine.
There are more than 30 Chinese brands in the sales ranking of new electric cars, which are sometimes difficult to pronounce. “Market operators are trying to feel what might be in demand,” says Omelnytskyi.
The increase in the cost of logistics has also done its job, and the need to invest in repairs is eating away at the benefits of buying used electric cars in the US. Therefore, now the prices of American and Chinese electric cars have equalized.
