In three American states – Arkansas, Maryland, and Missouri – they have to vote for the legalization of marijuana. Such decisions are made not without reason. A recent poll shows that smoking marijuana in the US is now more popular than ever, reports CNN.

According to a survey by the Gallup Organization, 16% of Americans reported that they had smoked marijuana in the past week. As for tobacco, it was smoked by 11% of respondents. The results are very different from those obtained by the organization in 1969. At the time, only 4% of Americans admitted to having tried marijuana at all. At the same time, 40% of respondents smoked cigarettes during the last week.

Today, the percentage of those who have tried marijuana has increased to 48%. The popularity of hemp grew gradually. Simultaneously with this trend, the popularity of cigarettes decreased. By 1985, 33% of Americans had tried marijuana, and 35% of those surveyed had smoked a cigarette in the past week. By 2013, only 19% of respondents smoked cigarettes at least once a week.

Marijuana is becoming popular among young people. 30% of adults under the age of 35 admitted to smoking it. Among people aged 35-45, only 10% are such, among people over 55 – 14%.

The increased consumption of marijuana has a general impact on society. For example, more than two-thirds of Americans now support the legalization of recreational cannabis use. In 1969, only 12% of respondents supported it.

We remind you that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine supported the draft law on the legalization of medical cannabis in Ukraine. The new law will regulate the circulation of hemp for medical, industrial purposes, and scientific and technical activities. It should expand access to cannabis for the treatment of a range of ailments. In particular, oncological diseases and post-traumatic stress disorder, obtained as a result of the war.
