The new generation of the Peugeot 5008 crossover still offers a spacious 7-seater interior, but raises its own futurism to a new, even higher level! And what else interesting can the Peugeot 5008 offer, what did it gain during the transition to the third generation? And what did it lose? You will find all the answers in the detailed review.
Design: classic large SUV with original details
I will note right away that I like the new Peugeot 5008 visually with its classic silhouette of a fairly large SUV crossover. We have two clearly separated volumes – the engine compartment and the interior – plus we have large wheels with outlined wheel arches and practical protective linings along the entire lower perimeter of the body. Large windows and large rear doors hint that a spacious interior awaits us inside. And the almost vertical trunk lid hints that even with a 7-seater layout, there will still be room for several bags. Classic SUV style, it is always relevant!
At the same time, Peugeot designers have found something to distinguish themselves from the rest. First of all, it is an integrated radiator grille that seems to be one with the front bumper, but also seems to protrude through separate slots. Add small headlights with the brand's triple "lion's claws" and a black glossy strip, on which the 5008 model number is indicated. At the back, a similar inscription 5008 is placed clearly in the center of the trunk lid (by the way, made of plastic), and the lights also consist of triple elements. Following the latest fashion of European manufacturers, there is no chrome decor on the body; instead, there is a gray-silver insert that seems to support the roof. Finally, take a closer look at the 19-inch YARI wheels: this is just a masterpiece of small details!
The third-generation Peugeot 5008 crossover is today the flagship of the passenger model line and one of the largest Peugeot cars available on the Ukrainian market: length – 4.79 meters; width – 1.9 meters; height – 1.69 meters; wheelbase – 2.9 meters; ground clearance is declared at 204 mm. In my opinion, the designers managed to perfectly maintain the balance between classic SUV proportions and at the same time give the car French originality.
Here is where there was a complete “no limit” to any bold experiments, it is in the cabin. On the example of the third generation Peugeot 5008, I first encounter the new Peugeot Panoramic i -Cockpit concept – and it is indeed exactly what the name says. It all starts as the i-Cockpit cabin with its small steering wheel and display behind it; but now this display seems to have flown into the air and is rounded around the driver to create a panoramic effect. It looks stunning, and taking into account the blue backlight, which is reflected in the metallized decorative panels - in general, the impression of flying at Warp speed between the stars is created. This spaceship is controlled by a new steering wheel with very wide spokes, which are dotted with buttons (by the way, with a clear physical “click” when pressed). Plus, between the driver and passenger, a central tunnel emerges, which then twists and hides under the front panel, which is covered with fabric and smoothly passes into the door cards. W-w-w-w-h! It seems that this interior can be viewed for days and weeks, finding more and more new details. Like very elegant switches under the steering wheel; or hidden wireless charging at the end of the central tunnel; or a high-placed “automatic” switch (like on a Porsche ); or a central niche with a hinged lid… That's it, stop!
If we move away from the first pleasant shock that the design of the Peugeot 5008 interior and its high-quality finishing materials give (“premium” is already close), then we understand that here design has somehow won over practicality. Yes, the new panoramic display means abandoning the 3D instrument panel; it’s a shame, because it was beautiful. In addition, the new display noticeably reflects everything light – for example, the driver’s T-shirt or shirt. And the block screen is frankly shifted towards the driver to create a panoramic effect. However, it turns out that from the front passenger’s point of view, there is just emptiness in front of him: sit down and look at the decor of the front panel. The massive center console not only looks like that, but really is – so the driver’s knee can rest on the console; thank goodness they at least provided a soft coating. The elegant waterfall strip really decorates the space between the driver and passenger, but it has a lot of gloss. Now think about it: we are talking about the place where the parking brake button, volume control, driving mode switch, buttons for turning on the windshield or rear window heating are located. That is, we are talking about a place that you really need to touch with your fingers often, where your palm will often be placed – and this place will be constantly dirty. Similarly, as the area around the engine start button and the “automatic” selector: you wanted to start or stop the engine, wanted to switch, you slightly smeared your fingers – and that’s it, take out a napkin and start wiping the black gloss.
Thank you, all the comments about the interior only concern the front part. After all, everything is fine behind, very fine. The thing is that the previous Peugeot 5008 offered a concept with separate, divided seats: three middle row seats and two rear row seats. This gave a feeling of equality between the three middle row passengers; but when there were only two of them, it was uncomfortable, because the outer passengers were moved far towards the doors and there was no central armrest. Therefore, the new generation of the Peugeot 5008 has returned to the usual format of the rear sofa: two comfortable seats on the right/left and an additional central seat in the center; and its backrest can now be folded down like an armrest. And the new Peugeot 5008 has also significantly added to the equipment: now the rear passengers are offered a separate climate control zone and heated seats. Together with the ability to slide the sofa back and forth, adjust the backrest angle, and have blinds on the windows, all this guarantees maximum comfort and a feeling of coziness for the middle-rear passengers. As for the rear-rear passengers (who are in the third row), we have two pretty good seats and a certain amount of headroom; however, there are no ventilation deflectors and the guides of the sofa in front are somewhat in the way of the feet.
Finally, a few words about the trunk. Good access to the luggage compartment is provided by a huge lid, and the shape of the car body itself provides excellent usable volume: from 348 liters (with a 7-seater cabin), and further to 916 liters (with a 5-seater cabin) or even a maximum of 2232 liters (with a 2-seater cabin). It is a pity that there are no hooks for bags and fasteners for small items. However, thankfully, there is a deep niche under the third row and the floor panel: a spare tire already fits here and there is still enough space for a first-aid kit, compressor, fire extinguisher and other necessary car accessories.
The front part of the new Peugeot 5008 is a victory for designers: incredible shapes, interesting decor, high-quality materials. True, ergonomics suffered a little. However, the “gloomy French geniuses” played their part in the back, offering comfortable convertible seats and maximum attention to detail: a large family will be satisfied! There is also some space for luggage, even with a 7-seater interior. If you want to know the exact details about the space, then the measurements of the interior and trunk will help you understand everything. So…
As usual, let's start with the front seats. So, the length of the front seat cushion is 50 cm in the standard position or a maximum of 53.5 cm, if you take into account the retractable footrest. The distance from the edge of the seat cushion to the accelerator pedal varies between 45-70 cm depending on the seat position. The height of the space for the torso and head, from the seat cushion to the ceiling is a maximum of 110 cm (measured along the backrest and headrest, the seat is lowered as much as possible, the backrest is set at an angle of 105-110 degrees).
In the second row of seats, we have a body/legroom reserve of 62-89 cm (from the base of the second-row sofa to the back of the front seat, depending on the adjustments and position of the front seat, the second-row sofa is moved as far back as possible). The distance from the sofa cushion to the ceiling is 100 cm (measured along the backrest and headrest, the backrest is set at an angle of 105-110 degrees).
Now for the third row of seats. The headroom/legroom is 55-69 cm, depending on how the middle (second) row of seats is moved. The headroom and headroom, from the third-row seat cushion to the ceiling, is 84 cm.
Finally, the measurements of the trunk. The width of the trunk within the wheel arches is 102 cm; taking into account the side niches, you can count on 132 cm, but these side niches are small. The depth of the trunk is 41 cm (up to the back of the third row of seats); or the depth is 104 cm (with the third row seats folded, up to the back of the second row of seats); or the depth is 165 cm (with the second-third row seats folded, along the folded seat backs); or the maximum depth of the trunk is 192 cm (with the second-third row seats folded, up to the back of the first row seat).
Measuring the dimensions of the Peugeot 5008's interior shows us that it is in the middle between two other 7-seater cars of the C/D class - SUV: we are talking about the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Nissan X - Trail. That is, in terms of interior space, the new Peugeot 5008 is quite in line with its competitors. But we will talk about competitors later, and now about the equipment.
Technology: they promised a lot, but what did we get?
I will recall the Peugeot 5008 crossover of the past, the second generation: the EMP 2 platform, the engine in the front transversely, considerable dimensions and a 7-seat interior, there were turbodiesels and classic 8-speed “automatics”, but only front-wheel drive. And now let’s look at the new Peugeot 5008 of the third generation: the STLA Medium platform , still the same load-bearing body and transverse installation of engines, still also considerable dimensions and a 7-seat interior. And also – turbodiesels have disappeared; what in Europe (they disappeared there even earlier), what in our market. This is very unpleasant. But maybe they got it somewhere? Maybe there will be some compensation?
Yes, not without reason; after all, the evolution of the Peugeot brand in general and the 5008 model in particular has moved towards electrification. For example, fully electric versions of the Peugeot E-5008 have appeared; and they can be with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. A powerful PHEV hybrid based on a 1.6-liter turbo engine has appeared: the total power reaches 195 hp, works with a robotic 7-speed automatic transmission, the battery should be enough for a range of about 80 km exclusively on electric power. Moreover, even the basic version is a hybrid. True, based on a gasoline 1.2-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine and a 48-volt hybrid add-on, also paired with a 6-speed robotic automatic transmission. It is this 136-horsepower hybrid that is the starting version for the Peugeot 5008 - both in Europe and in Ukraine.
Plus, for our market, the Peugeot 5008 is offered with a gasoline 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine, but without any hybrid addition. This engine works in tandem with a classic hydromechanical 6-speed "automatic" and front-wheel drive. It seems that not only the turbodiesel, but also the 8-speed "automatic" can be forgotten. And all-wheel drive can appear only when the electric modifications of the Peugeot E - 5008 arrive in Ukraine.
The main feature of the Peugeot 5008 in general is in the format of the car itself: it is a fairly large (but not too large) crossover, offering a 7-seater interior. The peculiarity of the Ukrainian versions of the Peugeot 5008 is the presence in the model range of a 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine paired with a traditional 6-speed “automatic”: power 180 hp (5500 rpm); torque 300 Nm (2000 rpm); acceleration 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds; maximum speed 215 km/h; fuel consumption 7.9 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle. So…
Behind the wheel: when emotions are more important than technical indicators
The large and heavy, also high-lifted Peugeot 5008 crossover suddenly puts a smile on the driver's face, which increases with each new kilometer on a good road. Although it is possible that this road is not very good - after all, the Peugeot 5008 crossover surprises with pleasant comfort and the caution with which it overcomes the next potholes or protrusions of Ukrainian roads. Moreover, the car provides good driving comfort at different speeds: you can smoothly and slowly roll over bumps, you can "fly" through them. Remembering the previous generation of Peugeot 5008 , I can't get rid of the feeling that the new crossover has become more comfortable in terms of suspension. And better in terms of sound insulation.
At the same time, the car has not lost its desire to turn. The light and not too sharp steering wheel sets the desired course, the Peugeot 5008 crossover clearly stands on the arc and holds well in the bend, it allows you to turn in a turn, but does not scare with a skid of the rear wheels. Is this exactly the high and heavy (1759 kg ) Peugeot 5008 crossover , and not the low aerodynamic fastback Peugeot 508? Yes, exactly - and the body rolls remind of this. But at the same time: the increased ground clearance and energy-intensive suspension of the Peugeot 5008 allow you to feel free on broken paths and dirt roads, you can not be so afraid of hitting irregularities with the bottom of the bumper or thresholds in the middle of the wheelbase. However, do not count on more, because with many passengers in the cabin and/or a considerable amount of things, the weight of the car is guaranteed to exceed 2+ tons - and two driving wheels may simply not "shove" out of mud or deep snow. Therefore, it is worth perceiving the new Peugeot 5008 as a roomy and convenient vehicle for a trip to the dacha or to your favorite meadow, for a vacation trip on good and not very good roads. So: the capabilities of the new Peugeot 5008 to overcome bad roads are significantly expanded compared to ordinary passenger cars - but these roads must still be under the wheels.
Is there enough power and engine traction? In general, yes. As long as there are 1-2 people in the cabin, you can drive quite briskly and to your heart's content, the engine pulls perfectly from 2-2.5 thousand revolutions and then the traction level reaches 4-5 thousand. Moreover, the "automatic" is set up so that the next time you shift gears, the engine does not drop below two thousand - thus, the turbo engine is almost always at the peak of torque. However, occasionally you can still feel the gear shifting. An interesting observation: after all, this 1.6-liter turbo engine has already been seen before, but with an 8-speed automatic transmission; or this 6-speed automatic transmission has been seen, but with a less powerful engine and on a smaller/lighter car - and everything was always fine, the shifts were imperceptible. In addition, even on the qualifying highway "hundred" (when I watch fuel consumption) the car drives in 5th gear, with about 2200 revolutions on the tachometer; although you can manually switch to 6th gear and get 1700 revolutions and better economy - this way you can win back about 0.5 liters per 100 km. Therefore, the thought periodically arises that in addition to turbodiesels, I really want to return the 8-speed "automatic", which was on the predecessor. And in general: for such a chic design and surprisingly pleasant chassis, I want to get more productive power units - if not to return diesels, then maybe a PHEV hybrid?
The 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine is laid out to its full 180 hp. power and 300 Nm of torque; moreover, the nature of the thrust build-up is even and it's great - you always know what to expect in the responses to pressing the accelerator pedal. And the 6-speed "automatic" generally works fine, only occasionally there are comments. But here are the numbers: my own measurement of the dynamics of 0-100 km/h gives a result of 9.5 seconds, fuel consumption in the city on average is kept at the level of 10.5-10.7-11 liters per 100 km of the road; in the best cases, you can get 8.2-8.5 liters per 100 km, but the maximum, provided a dynamic driving style and/or the presence of large traffic jams, can increase to about 12 liters per 100 km in the city. On the highway at a speed of about 100 km/h, fuel consumption is 6.2-6.5 liters per 100 km; however, if you manually switch to 6th gear, you can get 5.8-6 liters per 100 km. The car offers several basic driving modes (normal, sport, eco) plus several modes for off-road; however, in any case, you can only count on the front drive wheels, which are not averse to "burying" themselves in dry soil or mud. On bumps, the rear wheel hangs out very early; however, the body almost does not lead and does not creak. But here's what is interesting: having numerous minor remarks about the technical characteristics, the Peugeot 5008 was still remembered for its good driving character in general, it seems to lean towards itself - it is a surprisingly pleasant car.
Price: how much does the Peugeot 5008 cost and who are its competitors?
The new generation of the Peugeot 5008 crossover is offered in Ukraine with two engines (petrol-electric hybrid 1.2 Hybrid 136 or gasoline turbo engine 1.6 PureTech 180) and in two trim levels (ALLURE or GT), the car will always have a 6-speed “automatic” (although of a different design depending on the engine) and front-wheel drive. Interestingly, now the prices are the same for cars in the same trim level, but with different engines. Potentially, the model range also includes versions of the Plug - In hybrid type or even fully electric modifications of the E -5008, and the electric versions may also be with all-wheel drive. However, all this is offered in Europe; and in our country, as of now, there are four variants of the model.
The range is opened by the Peugeot 5008 ALLURE version: front and side airbags, side curtain airbags, ABS and ESP systems, Grip Control system, cruise control, lane keeping assistant, traffic sign recognition, collision warning system with emergency braking function, power steering, dual-zone (1.2 Hybrid) or three-zone (1.6 PureTech) climate control, front and rear electric windows, keyless entry and engine start system, 180 rear view camera and rear parking sensors, heated front seats, AGR driver's seat with additional retractable footrest, sliding second-row seats with backrest angle adjustment, third-row seats with 50/50 backrest folding, interior trim in Crispy fabric with dark leather elements, Peugeot Panoramic i-Cockpit interior concept with a pair of 10-inch HD displays, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity , six-speaker audio, FULL LED headlights, 19-inch YARI alloy wheels, etc. The cost of the Peugeot 5008 1.2 Hybrid 136 ALLURE is from UAH 1.503 million or almost $36 thousand; the cost of the Peugeot 5008 1.6 PureTech 180 ALLURE is from UAH 1.503 million or almost $36 thousand.
The maximum version of the Peugeot 5008 GT is located one level higher , where the following is added: adaptive cruise control, electric trunk lid with opening sensor under the rear bumper, front parking sensors, heated steering wheel and second-row seats, AGR driver and passenger seats, electric front seat adjustment and back massage function, central rear armrest, Alcantara interior trim , panoramic 21-inch HD display, Virtual i - Toggles touch switches , Pixel LED Technology matrix headlights , black roof, etc. The cost of the Peugeot 5008 1.2 Hybrid 136 GT is from UAH 1.674 million or $40 thousand; the cost of the Peugeot 5008 1.6 PureTech 180 GT is from UAH 1.674 million or $40 thousand.
The Peugeot 5008 test car was provided in versions with a 1.6-liter turbo engine and in the maximum GT configuration , plus some options. Let's go into detail with examples: matrix headlights, a panoramic 21-inch display, Virtual i-Toggles switches with the ability to select shortcut buttons (the display menu and these i-Toggles switches resemble the Peugeot 308 or Peugeot 408), AGR seats for the driver and passenger, electric adjustment and massage, heated second-row seats are a feature of the GT configuration; three-zone climate control is a feature of the version with a gasoline 1.6-liter turbo engine; mirrors with built-in 360-degree cameras, seats with Nappa leather trim and ventilation, wireless charging and more are a feature of the additional option package. And what will the rivals offer?
Here are a couple of the main competitors: Nissan X-Trail and Hyundai Santa Fe. Both can offer versions with front or all-wheel drive (instead, Peugeot 5008 only with front), both can offer versions with 200+ horsepower (here Peugeot 5008 loses again), both give a choice of 5- or 7-seater salons (in this case Peugeot 5008 is always 7-seater). However, in terms of filling of equipment and lower prices for these equipment, from the point of view of cost of 7-seater versions, from the point of view of emotionality instead of practicality – the new Peugeot 5008 can be a worthy rival.
Another group of competitors are the Mitsubishi Outlander, the new Volkswagen Tayron, and the Skoda Kodiaq (potentially a 7-seater saloon for the latter has been announced). However, I think that buyers of these cars are more focused on classic values, maximum practicality, mandatory all-wheel drive – and they are unlikely to really consider the Peugeot 5008 for purchase. By the way, from the point of view of emotions and positioning as a “semi-premium”, a somewhat similar competitor may be the Mazda CX-60; there is all-wheel drive here, but there is no 7-seater saloon. So there will be some competitors. And then the question is – what can the Peugeot 5008 win and what will it lose? Let's get to the bottom of it.
