The current year 2025 has presented many new “popular” crossovers that will be with us for a long time and will be sold in large quantities. One example of this is the new second-generation Opel Grandland – a car that has “grown up” in almost everything compared to its predecessor and is trying to give as many advantages as possible to its potential buyers. What exactly is it about? And is there a drawback to the Opel Grandland, besides the advantages? All the details are in the full-length review of the new product.

Design: a new incarnation of a familiar idea

Usually, getting to know a car starts with the "face" and here the new Opel Grandland will definitely have something interesting to offer. After all, all modern Opel cars use the common Opel Vizor design of the front part of the body: these are flat headlights and a black glossy insert between them, in the center of which the logo is placed. However, the new Opel Grandland found in which direction to move further - and received a front part, which can be called 3 D LED Vizor: from now on the insert is made transparent, inside there is a three-dimensional logo, which can also be additionally backlit (for maximum trim levels). An interesting solution also found its place behind - now the lights are connected by a solid red LED strip, in the middle of which the OPEL brand designation is applied, and the name of the model itself is printed in embossed letters on the trunk lid. Moreover, such a design of the rear part not only attracts attention, but also emphasizes perhaps the main feature of the car - it has become bigger, wider!

In fact, the increase in the dimensions of the second-generation Opel Grandland is the most important change, if we talk about its body in general. The proportions of the body itself have not changed - it is still a classic crossover with a long roofline - but now this body has stretched to 4.65 meters: the new car has added a significant +17 cm in length compared to the previous Opel Grandland! Moreover, this is not a banal increase in length, but a proportional increase in size - yes, the wheelbase has grown by +11 centimeters and now reaches 2.78 meters, the car has become much wider and a little higher. Therefore, the new Opel Grandland now really looks like a "GRAND": if earlier it was somewhere in the center of the C-SUV segment, now it has clearly taken a position at its top.

The new Opel Grandland crossover is perceived as a rather large car for its class – because it really is: length – 4.65 meters; width – 1.905 meters; height – 1.665 meters; wheelbase – 2.784 meters. The increase in size not only in one direction, but in all key directions allowed to maintain good proportions: this is a classic SUV (personally, it reminds me a bit of the Peugeot 5008 with its similar classic proportions). It is clear that this is a modern car of 2025, plus notable interesting details such as hidden door window seals or numerous sharp and straight lines (personally, it reminds me a bit of the Opel Astra H); however, the most interesting details are the design of the front end and rear optics. Under the rear bumper, an exhaust is hidden, branched out into two sides.

If the front of the car is like an evolution of past developments, then the interior is like a revolution. After all, recently Opel cars had interiors that were made according to the Pure Panel concept: this is when two displays were combined into one common element. However, the new Opel Grandland offers us a clearly highlighted central display (in the maximum configuration – even a wide-format 16-inch) and a small narrow instrument panel display. The latter only seems small at first glance, because in fact its size is enough to accommodate all useful information in fairly large indicators that are convenient to read at a glance; plus there are several display options where you can display the necessary information.

Next, about the other display – the central, touch-sensitive one: it immediately impresses with its size and the amount of information in which you can get lost. But upon detailed study, everything becomes immediately clear: on the right and left – temperature indicators; in the area closer to the passenger – a small window with additional information (clock, air quality); the central part and the system menu – something that is already well known from other Opel models (Opel Astra, Opel Combo, Opel Mokka) and other Citroen or Peugeot cars.

And that was just the beginning of the story about the interior. First, pay attention to the numerous buttons and switches under the central display: yes, the Opel Grandland crossover emphasizes everyday driving convenience even in the smallest details! Second: an interesting nuance for the driver – the small display of the instrument panel is somewhat “sunk” in its niche, so it is better protected from direct sunlight and does not give glare. Third, the center console is another mini-masterpiece of the interior.

It all starts with the fact that the center console is two-story: a convenient shelf on the lower level and a niche with wireless charging on the upper level. Moreover, this niche is made in the form of a separate box with a lid and a translucent insert – like a gray-toned panel, but the wireless charging indicator is visible. In addition, this gray-toned-transparent panel actually has contour lighting with different colors that can change when you select different driving modes; similar colors also appear on the transparent lines-inserts at the top of the front panel.

Interestingly, these lines are not just stripes, but more voluminous elements that protrude from the panel by a few millimeters - thus, the light seems to gain volume. Finally, fourth: pay attention to the location of the ventilation deflectors: the central one is actually located in the center, the passenger one is moved closer to the passenger, and the side ones are generally located on the doors. This solution has already been seen on some cars (for example, various BMW models of the 1980s-1990s) and does not have any particular advantages or disadvantages; however, it looks surprisingly interesting. True, next to these ventilation deflectors is the fabric of the door panel trim, which is not very practical if you touch them with dirty hands or put your elbows with the window open. But even here, Opel ergonomists did not miss a beat - and the door armrests are already covered with leatherette, which is easy to care for and clean.

In the front part of the Opel Grandland cabin, there is a feeling that they worked on it carefully, tried to make it comfortable and original at the same time, invented new solutions in small details. I appreciate this approach. And a separate “plus” for the seats: incredibly comfortable, with clearly defined back and leg support, an ideal profile (at least for my back), the ability to adjust the angle of inclination and the length of the seat cushion.

Now about the rear of the cabin; which is generally not bad in terms of space (I will give the measurements below), a comfortable angle of the sofa back, the presence of ventilation deflectors and an armrest, but… That's all. It seems not bad, but-but-but! You see, from a car that simultaneously claims the title of "family crossover" and "brand flagship", you want to get more. For example, longitudinal adjustment of the rear sofa and the ability to change the angle of the backrest, a separate "climate" zone and blinds on the windows, a sliding table and pockets to the right/left of the sofa. However, no, there is none of this. I will say even more: the rear central armrest appears only in the maximum configuration (it is not in the starting one), and heated rear seats even for the maximum configuration are an option and are included in the equipment package, which costs a lot of money.

It's simply amazing how well thought out and carefully crafted the front of the cabin is – then how "minimal-enough" everything is done in the back – and then how beautifully everything is done in the trunk. After all, in addition to a considerable space (550 liters or 1645 liters with the rear seats folded), we also have an electric lid drive and a two-story floor, side niches and latches, a couple of strong hooks for bags. A wonderful trunk!

The rear sofa is massive and soft, it is set at a good height and has a good backrest angle; that is, in general, it is comfortable to sit and there is enough space; but I would like to add a couple of equipment items for additional convenience. For example, the trunk does not cause such comments: it is worked out to the smallest detail.

Has the increase in size affected the interior space? And in general, can the Opel Grandland be considered spacious compared to its rivals? Measurements of the interior space will help to find the answers to these questions. So, let's start with the front of the cabin. So, the length of the front seat cushion can vary within 50-56 cm thanks to the retractable footrest. The distance from the edge of the seat cushion to the accelerator pedal varies in the range of 46-71 cm depending on the longitudinal adjustment of the front seat.

The headroom in terms of height for the trunk and head is 101 cm (measured along the backrest and headrest, the seat is lowered as much as possible, the backrest is set at an angle of 105-110 degrees). It is worth noting that the test car was equipped with a panoramic glass roof, which forces the ceiling to be thicker and "eats" the space above the head. I measured the height of the cabin to the ceiling level; if you measure to the level of the panoramic glass roof, then there will be a plus of a couple of centimeters of height space; if you take a car without a panoramic glass roof, then there will also be a plus of a couple of centimeters of height space.

But let's take a look at the rear of the cabin. So: we have a reserve of legroom at the level of 60-84 cm (measurement from the base of the rear sofa to the back of the front seat, depending on the adjustments and position of the front seat). The distance from the cushion of the rear sofa to the ceiling is 97 cm (measurement from the base of the sofa along the back and headrest).

And a few words about the trunk. Its width between the wheel arches is 102 cm; however, if you lower the floor panel to a lower level, you need to take into account the side plastic retainers - and they protrude by about 7 cm on the right and left. The depth of the trunk in the standard position of the rear seats is 93 cm (when the backs of the rear row are raised); with the rear sofa folded, the depth of the trunk is 152 cm (measured to the edge of the folded back of the rear seat) or a maximum of 180 cm (measured to the stop at the backs of the front seats).

Briefly about the size of the cabin: yes, the new Opel Grandland has transformed its increased dimensions into a spacious interior. For example, it is more spacious than the Peugeot 3008 and is on a par with the Volkswagen Tiguan or MG HS, which offer some of the best space reserves among competitors. But I will talk about the competitors later - for now let's talk about the equipment.

Technology: no revolutions and no diesel, but with an emphasis on electrification

The new generation of the Opel Grandland crossover is built on the STLA Medium platform, the car has a supporting body, as well as a front independent McPherson suspension and a rear semi-independent suspension based on a U-shaped torsion beam. Most versions are ready to offer front-wheel drive and only the electric version of the Opel Grandland can be with front or all-wheel drive: in the latter case, two electric motors are used, to drive the front and rear wheels separately. Perhaps the greatest technological achievement of the new Opel Grandland can be called an expanded offer of hybrids - a conventional one based on a 1.2-liter engine or a PHEV-hybrid based on a 1.6-liter engine.

True, the story about electric versions or PHEV hybrid is relevant only for Europe; at least, as of now. Instead, our car is presented with a gasoline-electric 1.2-liter 136-horsepower hybrid power unit (like the Peugeot 3008) or a regular 1.6-liter 180-horsepower gasoline turbo engine (this is a descendant of the Prince series or EP 6) paired with a classic hydromechanical 6-speed automatic transmission. I just remember the Peugeot 408 and understand that there a similar engine developed 215 hp. power, and the “automatic” was also 8-speed. Or I remember the previous generation Opel Grandland – and in addition to the “automatic” I also note the missing 1.5-liter 130-horsepower diesel engine. It was replaced by a 1.2-liter hybrid; but that's a separate story.

In short, the new Opel Grandland is not a revolution, but rather a comprehensive refinement in key areas: larger dimensions, a modified platform and chassis, modern matrix optics, an expansion of the range of hybrids, the appearance of fully electric versions. Although the latter are not currently presented in Ukraine; instead, the maximum possible engine in our country is a gasoline 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine paired with a 6-speed “automatic” and front-wheel drive. For such a car, the declared power is 180 hp (5500 rpm) and torque is 300 Nm (2000 rpm), acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and a maximum speed of 213 km/h, as well as fuel consumption of 7.9 per 100 km in the combined cycle. So…

Behind the wheel: a "good guy" in everything

On the road, in handling and in terms of driver feel, the new Opel Grandland doesn't look or feel like a "star" by any criteria, but it doesn't fail anywhere either. Instead, it holds firmly at a "four" or "four plus" rating: a very balanced character.

Let's start with the engine and automatic transmission: this pair is identical to the Peugeot 5008 - and the impressions are identical. The engine offers sufficient traction already from 2-2.5 thousand revolutions and then evenly increases the power output to 4-5 thousand - that is, in the medium revolutions zone and up to almost maximum, you always have uniform acceleration and silence in the cabin. At high revolutions (4.5-5-6 thousand) you already have sound in the cabin, but there is also a maximum power of 180 hp - and taking into account the smaller size and lower weight of the Opel Grandland (1655 kg) compared to the Peugeot 5008 (1759 kg), there is a feeling of a more lively car. Although we still couldn't reach the passport dynamics figures: with the declared acceleration to the qualifying "hundred" in 8.7 seconds, my best figures were at the level of 8.9-9.1 seconds: that is, this is a 9-second crossover - not a record, but not bad.

Now add to this the “automatic” with its soft and timely gear changes. Moreover, it often lets the engine “spin” and usually shifts so that the engine almost never drops below 1.8-2 thousand revolutions (that is, when there is already a reserve of traction); therefore, in the end, it turns out a very successful setup. It would seem that one should complain about the presence of only a 6-speed “automatic” against the 8-speed of the related car Peugeot 408; but in the city these gears are enough, and the automatic transmission does not jerk once again with the shifts, getting entangled in 2-3-4-who-knows-what gear.

Although on the highway, at a speed of 100 km/h (where I usually measure fuel consumption), this “automatic” is in no hurry to switch to sixth gear. It turns out strange: you are driving at a speed of 100 km/h with a fuel consumption of 5.5-6 liters per “hundred” and having 2.1-2.2 thousand revolutions on the tachometer; but if you manually switch to sixth gear, then you get both less fuel consumption (5-5.2 liters per 100 km), and lower revolutions (1.7-1.8 thousand revolutions). If you pick up a slightly higher speed – about 110-115 km/h – then the “automatic” will finally switch to sixth gear by itself, while you will have about two thousand revolutions on the tachometer and fuel consumption again 5.5-6 liters. So: it was not without minor remarks; but overall we have a solid “four”.

Next – the chassis and suspension. In general, the car gives a feeling of good comfort. Thanks to the large wheels with rather “thick” high-profile tires, it literally “rolls” over the joints of the asphalt and only slightly notices small protrusions-unevennesses. The springs and shock absorbers work well on large holes, the large wheelbase also adds to the comfort in general – the feeling of irregularities and their shocks is somewhere there, far, far away. At least, this is the case for the driver and front passenger; but what about the rear passengers? In fact, in general – it is also quite good, normal comfort: there is no feeling that you are riding on a hard wheel, you can feel the softness of the springs and shock absorbers. Yes, yes, of course, such suspension settings (also multiplied by the high body) lead to considerable rolls in corners.

But I admit: firstly, I am ready to put up with them for such comfort and energy consumption; secondly, we are still talking about a family crossover without any sporty features in terms of handling. But as for ease in terms of handling – as much as you want: a fairly light steering wheel, average sharpness (2.7 turns from lock to lock), more or less normal reactions to turns, understandable slipping to the outside of the turn when overspeeding. There is no linear clarity in the bends, drawn with a compass of VAG cars or Mazda, but there is also no “loose” (pardon the word) steering of some other Japanese or French crossovers. Therefore, for the balance of good comfort and quite understandable handling – again a “four” or “four with a plus” is guaranteed.

The 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine and the 6-speed “automatic” find a common language perfectly: they are not record holders in terms of dynamics, they do not grab “stars from the sky”, but the acceleration control is convenient, and the acceleration is enough in most cases. In the city, fuel consumption is about 10 liters per 100 km; my minimum was 8.3 liters (open roads and smooth driving style), and the maximum reached 11+ liters (traffic jams and/or dynamic driving style). On the highway at a speed of 100 km/h, taking into account the above-described nuances, get ready for fuel consumption of about 5.2-5.5 liters per 100 km of the road. As of now, all versions of the Opel Grandland have only front-wheel drive, and there is not even any auxiliary mode for off-road. Instead, the DRIVE MODE switch gives a choice of three typically “asphalt” settings; changing driving modes affects the operation of the automatic transmission, engine response, and steering weight – this is how you can make the crossover feel sportier, but it’s far from a CUPRA Terramar or even a Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line. But the price is much more affordable, don’t you agree? By the way, about the prices…

Price: how much does the Opel Grandland cost and who are the competitors

At the time of preparation of the material, the Opel Grandland crossover was offered in Ukraine with two power units and two trim levels – that is, in total we have four car variants plus the possibility of ordering options.

The model range is opened by the Opel Grandland Edition, which immediately offers the following: ABS and ESP systems, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assistant, collision warning system with emergency braking function, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, front and side airbags, inflatable side curtain airbags, electric power steering, dual-zone climate control, electric windows, keyless entry and engine start, front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, AGR front seats with cushion length adjustment, heated steering wheel and seats, electric trunk lid, interior trim with Bird fabric, front center armrest, digital 10-inch instrument cluster, multimedia system with 10-inch touch display and wireless Mirror Screen connection (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), six-speaker audio, FULL LED headlights, automatic activation headlights, lights with illuminated OPEL inscription, 19-inch alloy wheels, etc. The price of the Opel Grandland 1.6 PureTech 180 Automatic Transmission-6 Edition car is from UAH 1.259 million or $30.5 thousand; the price of the Opel Grandland 1.2 Hybrid 136 Automatic Transmission-6 Edition car is from UAH 1.343 million or $32.5 thousand.

The Opel Grandland GS version is located one level higher, where the following has been added: interior trim with fabric and leather elements, IntelliLux LED HD Light matrix headlights, 3D VIZOR LED front (backlit logo), 16-inch widescreen touchscreen display, wireless charging, laminated acoustic side windows, tinted rear windows, black roof, etc. The price of the Opel Grandland 1.6 PureTech 180 Automatic-6 GS car is from UAH 1.436 million or $34.8 thousand; the price of the Opel Grandland 1.2 Hybrid 136 Automatic-6 GS car is from UAH 1.436 million or $34.8 thousand (this is not a mistake, in the case of the GS configuration, the prices are the same for both engines).

The maximum version of the GS is easiest to recognize by the matrix headlights and the same 3 D VIZOR design with bright LED logo illumination. In fact, there is still a difference in tinted windows and a contrasting black roof, but it is almost invisible at first glance; instead, the two versions offer the same 19-inch wheels and an identical design of the rear of the body. In the cabin, the maximum version of the GS is distinguished by the upholstery of the seats (although their shape is the same) and an enlarged central 16-inch display (although the 10-inch instrument panel display is present in both trim levels). Panoramic glass roof, 360-degree cameras, a head-up display on the windshield, an air quality monitoring system, and rear cross traffic warning are all separate options or components of an additional equipment package even for the maximum version of the GS. Also offered as an option is a Nappa leather interior, electric front seat adjustments, a back massage function for the driver, and heated rear seats; but such a package costs 85.5 thousand hryvnias – wow, that’s a lot! Especially if you just wanted to get one component of the package, and now you have to pay for everything at once.

However, what about competitors? Are they more expensive or cheaper? Let's start with a group of rivals in the form of Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Karoq, Mazda CX-30, MG HS, Peugeot 3008, Toyota Corolla Cross: compact crossovers C-SUV, emphasis on front-wheel drive versions, average in terms of space. In this case, the new Opel Grandland wins because for a similar price it is much larger and more spacious inside (this is against Mazda), it is perceived as more modern (this is against Skoda), and also fully European (this is against MG). Of course, each of the competing cars has certain trump cards - hybrid, turbodiesel, all-wheel drive - but it is impossible to refuse the idea that the Opel Grandland will significantly complicate their lives.

Now let's consider a group of rivals in the form of Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan X-Trail, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV 4, Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Tucson, Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V, etc. In this case, they already play a very strong role: larger sizes and more spacious interiors, there are cool hybrids or powerful turbo engines, you can find 7-seater cars, most rivals are ready to offer all-wheel drive, some can offer a turbodiesel. Frankly speaking, the new Opel Grandland can significantly "get a beating" from such strong competitors. If not for one "but" in the form of price: offering similar dimensions, a spacious interior, good equipment, a well-known brand, this crossover is simply more affordable.

The previous review was dedicated to the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line, which claims the title of the best car of the second half of 2025. So: the question mark in the title of the previous article made me put the Opel Grandland – yeah, that’s how high I rate it. This is not about a “head-to-head” comparison, because Volkswagen wins by one goal. But this is about what the car can offer, taking into account its price. And just from this point of view – it is very impressive how much the new Opel Grandland gives for its money! Starting from the techno-classical design and increased dimensions that affected the interior space, continuing with carefully worked out details and successful chassis tuning, ending with an excellent list of equipment even from the starting configuration. The new Opel Grandland can hardly be called revolutionary, but it tries to “grow” relative to itself and give the potential buyer more in each of the key areas – and it succeeds.
