MX Master top line mice are among the most comfortable among all mice. A loud statement, right? But it is true. One of the indicators of convenience is that for several generations, the shape of the MX Master model has not changed at all. The sensor, software, keys improved, but not the form. Logitech put a lot of effort into the body of the mouse. There are not many changes in the next mouse update called “3S”, which, in my opinion, is a very correct index, because there are no updates for a full-fledged “four” here. But there is much to talk about.
For example, about the new main keys and sensor. I will say right away that this will not be just a review, but rather the experience of a person who has been using MX Master 3 for a long time and has something to compare it with. I will also answer the question of whether it is worth updating from the 3rd model, or even earlier ones.
Configuration
MX Master 3S is sold in two versions – regular and “For Mac”. I have a regular kit, which includes a USB-A – USB-C charging cable and a Logi Bolt receiver. The Logitech company is gradually transferring its products to a new standard instead of Unifying. According to the manufacturer, it is more economical in terms of energy consumption and more protected. In normal day-to-day use, I didn’t notice a difference between the Bluetooth connection and Logi Bolt receiver.
The “For Mac” package does not include a receiver, and the charging cable is slightly different — USB-C — USB-C.
Body design and materials
If something works well, don’t touch it. This happened in the MX Master 3S model as well. The shape and dimensions of the mouse are completely similar to the previous model, even the grippy texture of the surface that is under the palm. It’s hard for me to say anything bad about this design in terms of looks. I like everything here.
The mouse is sold in two colors – dark gray and light gray. The MX Master 3 was sold in the same colors, but the light gray became even lighter. In my opinion, the light gray color is the best for this model, but it is the least practical.
It was the same with the previous model. The thing is, no matter how clean your hands are when you touch the mouse, the place under the thumb of the right hand will change color, and unfortunately, there is almost nothing you can do about it, except to try to clean the surface.
Therefore, if you want the mouse to have as few traces of use as possible, then buy it in a dark color.
Logitech MX Master 3S ergonomics
I have to warn you that there will be a lot of compliments on the body shape of this model in this section, but the mouse really has a lot to praise. Although, it should be understood that even this mouse will not be suitable for absolutely everyone and for any tasks.
The MX Master 3S is quite a large mouse and hardly suitable for portable use. It is ideal for working at a comfortable desk throughout the day. You put your hand and don’t want to let go. If you have not used mice of this line before, you will most likely get used to it very quickly. The mouse is ideal for palm grip.
But with a weight of 141 grams, the mouse is definitely not light. Therefore, it will not suit everyone who likes sharp and clear movements. Precision and smoothness are the main elements of the Logitech MX Master 3S.
Keys
In the new model, the switches under the main keys have changed. They became a little softer when pressed and noticeably quieter. In the previous model, the click was clearly pronounced both by hearing and by touch. From the point of view of acoustic comfort, the mouse has become almost perfect. At the same time, the click still feels good and there is no feeling of uncertain pressing.
All other keys and wheels have not changed. Everything is in its place and everything works well. First of all, the main scroll wheel is what made this mouse so popular. There are also two scrolling modes here — end-to-end for scrolling large documents and stepwise and the ability to automatically switch between them. In my opinion, the wheel lacks a bit of grip, but otherwise it works great.
The side wheel also works as before and is a real find in large tables and timelines in the video editor. And not only in them, because thanks to the proprietary software, you can configure almost any actions on them.
Other buttons such as: behind the main wheel, navigation buttons and the gesture button under the right thumb work well and without complaints.
Perhaps you noticed that I mentioned the right hand several times in the text. Unfortunately, there is no option for the left hand.
Connection
Connecting the mouse to the computer is as simple and fast as possible. To do this, it is enough to select one of the three slots with the button on the bottom of the mouse and find the mouse in the Bluetooth settings. It is interesting that Windows computers find the mouse without any problems.
MX Master 3S stores up to three connected PCs in memory, and switching between them is as fast as possible. This is convenient, especially when you have several computers at work, or a computer and a tablet.
Bluetooth connection works stably, without any problems. I’ve used the mouse with a MacBook Air M1 and various Windows laptops.
Logitech MX Master 3S sensor
One of the improvements of the MX Master 3S is the updated Darkfield sensor. Unlike the previous model, its resolution is now 8000 dpi compared to 4000 dpi before. Subjectively, the mouse became a little more comfortable to use at a higher dpi, especially in combination with a 4K monitor. But I can’t say that MX Master 3 caused any discomfort.
The accuracy of the sensor is excellent on any surface. Let me remind you that MX Master mice can work anywhere without problems – on a mat, on fabric, on glossy surfaces, and even on glass. And it works stably and without disruptions.
Logi Options+ and Flow
To fully use the mouse, you need to install the program Logi Options+ for on your Windows or MacOS computer. In it, you can adjust the resolution of the sensor, the operation of the wheels, and the functionality of the buttons. Logi Options+ has a function of binding button actions to certain programs. Works great and these profiles switch instantly when switching between programs.
An interesting feature of Logitec’s flagship product is a Flow feature that allows you to quickly switch between different computers to which the mouse is connected and which are on the same Wi-Fi network. Moreover, it does not matter whether it is Windows or Mac. This is quite convenient, especially when you need to copy certain information from one computer to another simply by dragging the cursor from screen to screen. However, there are certain shortcomings in the work of Flow. For example, if your mouse is configured differently on different computers, these settings will switch with a second delay. This is especially noticeable in cases where you have different dpi on different computers.
There are no complaints about the software, except that the Logitech utility does not know the Ukrainian language, as well as the company’s official website.
Battery life
Logitech claims 70 days of operation from a full charge of the built-in battery for this model. My mouse works for about 45 days when used every day for 8-10 hours. Far from the official numbers, but still not bad. In addition, the mouse supports fast charging and you can use it while charging.
