TSMC has offered NVIDIA, AMD and Broadcom a stake in a joint venture that would operate Intel's foundries, sources said. The Taiwanese chipmaker plans to control operations of Intel's Foundry unit, but its stake will not exceed 50%. Qualcomm has received a similar offer, Reuters reported.
The talks are in their early stages. They began after the Donald Trump administration asked TSMC to help struggling Intel. The discussions are being held behind closed doors because the information is confidential.
Details of the initiative, including restrictions on TSMC's stake in the project and the involvement of partners, have been revealed for the first time. A final deal, if reached, would require approval from US authorities. The Trump administration does not want Intel or its manufacturing unit to be completely controlled by a foreign company.
The value of the potential deal is unknown at this time. Intel, TSMC, NVIDIA, AMD and Qualcomm declined to comment, while the White House and Broadcom did not respond to requests for comment.
