Samsung Display has demonstrated a microLED screen designed specifically for smartwatches at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, CNET reports.
The concept smartwatch reaches a peak brightness of 4000 nits. For comparison, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the brightest smartwatch on the market with 3000 nits, making the microLED display one-third brighter.
Compared to OLED, microLED reportedly has lower power consumption, better color reproduction, and most importantly, a longer lifespan and a significantly reduced risk of pixel burn-in.
Such a bright display will provide two main advantages to smartwatch users. First, the display will be clearly visible in any conditions, even in direct sunlight. Secondly, the extremely high brightness allows the display to be used as a flashlight, which can make specialized LED flashlights in smartwatches unnecessary.
Samsung Display has not yet announced when this panel will go into mass production, or which smartwatch manufacturers are planning to produce devices with this screen. Earlier, it was reported that the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra, and Garmin Fenix may receive such a panel.
