Elon Musk is going to increase the number of chips for the xAI supercomputer located in Memphis, Tennessee, tenfold. This is stated in a press release on the website of the Memphis Grand Chamber.
Musk’s AI supercomputer, known as Colossus, is already the largest computer of its kind in the world. It has more than 100 thousand Hopper GPUs from NVIDIA. Now xAI is working to double this number, which NVIDIA announced at the end of October 2024.
Despite the impressive capacity, xAI says it plans to install at least one million GPUs in Colossus. Representatives of the city of Memphis say that this process has already begun.
The new facilities will be used to train the Grok chatbot, which is currently available only to paid X users. In addition, the company needs these resources to close the gap with AI leaders such as OpenAI and Google.
When creating his company, Elon Musk stated that xAI would work on artificial intelligence that would help humanity accelerate scientific discoveries. He also stated that the company’s mission is to “understand the true nature of the universe,” but so far, the company’s AI is only capable of creating Musk’s own dipfaces.
