In October 2024, Tesla introduced Cybercab, a robot taxi for two passengers without a steering wheel or pedals. A new self-driving taxi is due in 2026, but it may not be fully autonomous. According to Gizmodo, the company is looking for operators to remotely control and troubleshoot the taxi.

The job posting is about recruiting people for a remote teleoperation team for future products. In addition to working with taxis, the team will also be responsible for controlling Optimus humanoid robots, which have already been operated during the presentation.

“Tesla AI’s Teleoperation team is charged with providing remote access to our robotaxis and humanoid robots. Our cars and robots operate autonomously in challenging environments. As we iterate on the AI that powers them, we need the ability to access and control them remotely,” the job description says.

In this position, employees will need to create “highly optimized, reliable, low-latency data streaming over unreliable vehicles in the real world.” To do this, Tesla is looking for software engineers with knowledge of C++ and Python.

In addition, the job description also mentions that remote operators will be able to take control of both taxis and robots thanks to “state-of-the-art VR equipment that allows them to remotely perform complex and intricate tasks.” The website also lists an approximate annual salary of $120 to $318 thousand, additional bonuses in the form of cash and stock, and other benefits.
