Sony plans to release a console capable of running PlayStation 5 games. Currently, the device is at the prototype stage and no decision has been made on its launch, Bloomberg reports.
According to people familiar with the development, the product aims to expand Sony’s reach and compete with Nintendo in the portable gaming market. It will also compete with a potential Xbox portable console.
The idea is based on the PlayStation Portal, an 8-inch portable device that Sony released in 2023 that allows users to play PS5 games by streaming them over the Internet. The device was an unexpected success and exceeded Sony’s expectations. According to anonymous sources, Portal was originally planned as a separate console, similar to Valve’s Steam Deck.
The launch of Sony’s portable console may still be several years away, and the company may decide not to launch the product, according to sources who wished to remain anonymous.
