The next Nintendo console will support games from the current Switch. This was announced by the company’s president Shuntaro Furukawa in X. It will also be possible to transfer an account and an already paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription to the new console.

This news is directly related to recent analysts’ reports that sales of Switch consoles and Switch games are falling. Users are buying less and less games for the console, which is coming to the end of its life. With this announcement, Furukawa assures players that the games they purchase will not be held captive by an outdated console, nor will a subscription paid for, for example, for a year.

Nintendo also talked about the sales figures for the current version of the Switch. Over the past three months, 4.72 million units have been sold, which is 31% less than in the same period last year. However, sales are significantly higher than those of the company’s previous consoles.

As a reminder, Furukawa previously announced that the successor to the Nintendo Switch would be unveiled by the end of fiscal year 2024, i.e. by April 2025.
