The astronauts of the SpaceX Polaris Dawn spacecraft have successfully entered space, a first for a private company. Billionaire Jared Isaacson, who financed the mission, went into space, The Verge reports.
Isaacson stepped out of the capsule to his waist. He was testing SpaceX’s new spacesuits, which are designed to increase mobility. After him, SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis went into space to conduct other tests.
The astronauts did not go fully into space and both relied on 3.7-meter hoses to supply them with oxygen.
The other two privately trained Polaris Dawn astronauts, SpaceX engineer Anna Menon and retired US Air Force fighter pilot Scott Potit, remained inside the capsule. However, they were also in a space vacuum, as the Dragon Capsule does not have an airlock.
