Morgan Stanley analysts predict that by the end of the decade, the boom in data centers around the world could cause emissions of about 2.5 billion metric tons of CO2 and accelerate investment in decarbonization. This was reported by Reuters.
Large companies, including Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon, are driving the rapid proliferation of power-hungry data centers to expand their artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies.
At the same time, the companies are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from their centers by 2030.
“This creates a large market for decarbonization solutions,” Morgan Stanley explained.
Experts also believe that greenhouse gas emissions in the global data center industry will be about 40% of what the United States emits per year.
By the way, Meta has recently announced a partnership with Sage Geosystems, a startup that plans to provide geothermal energy to its data centers. Potentially, it is about 150 MW of energy.
