Meta has announced a partnership with Sage Geosystems, a startup that plans to provide geothermal energy to its data centers. Potentially, it is about 150 MW of energy.

According to Meta, this partnership will significantly expand the use of geothermal energy in the United States. The agreement between the parties provides for cooperation on the project, the first phase of which is planned to be launched in 2027.

According to Reuters, the location has not yet been determined, but it will be east of the Rocky Mountains. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Meta’s announcement comes as President Joe Biden’s administration is asking major tech companies to invest in new clean energy to meet growing electricity demand.

This surge is driven by the introduction of technologies such as generative artificial intelligence, which require large amounts of electricity to power data centers.
