Three authors are suing Anthropic, accusing it of misusing their books and hundreds of thousands of others to train the chatbot Claude. This was reported by Reuters.

The lawsuit was filed in a California federal court by writers and journalists Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson. They claim that Anthropic used pirated versions of their and other works to teach Claude to respond to human cues.

An Anthropic spokesperson said the company was aware of the lawsuit and was evaluating it, but declined to comment further. The authors’ lawyer did not comment on the situation.

By the way, this is not the first such lawsuit over possible copyright infringement. For example, in the spring of 2024, it became known that American newspapers sued Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement in AI training.

The lawsuit claims that Microsoft and OpenAI’s developments reproduce copyrighted content from newspapers “verbatim” when asked to do so.
