In the United States, TikTok is trying to convince a federal appeals court that the country’s Department of Justice has misrepresented the social network’s ties to China. This is reported by Reuters.

According to TikTok, the DOJ made factual errors in the case. Earlier, the department’s lawyers said that the app poses a threat to national security, as it allows the Chinese government to collect American data and secretly manipulate the content they consume.

TikTok now says there is no doubt that its content recommendation engine and user data are stored in the United States on cloud servers operated by Oracle, and that content moderation decisions affecting U.S. users are made in the United States.

The Court of Appeals will hold oral arguments on the appeal on September 16, 2024. This will move the issue of TikTok’s fate to the last weeks before the US presidential election, which will take place on November 5.

The law gives ByteDance until January 19, 2025 to sell TikTok or face a ban.

TikTok and its parent company ByteDance have filed a lawsuit in a US federal court to block a law that could ban the social network in the country.
