Paid subreddits may appear on Reddit in the future. The company’s CEO Steve Huffman hinted at this during the announcement of the financial statements, Engadget reports.
“I think the existing, altruistic, free version of Reddit will continue to exist and grow and thrive just the way it has. But now we will unlock the door for new use cases, new types of subreddits that can be built that may have exclusive content or private areas, things of that nature,” said Huffman.
In addition, he said that in the future, the platform will test search based on artificial intelligence. Both decisions are related to the fact that the company needs additional sources of income.
“Later this year, we will begin testing new search result pages powered by AI to summarize and recommend content, helping users dive deeper into products, shows, games and discover new communities on Reddit,” Huffman noted.
The CEO also added that one day the search engine will start generating additional funds through advertising. According to him, the search on Reddit has not changed for a long time, and such a change can help attract new users.
Earlier it became known that Reddit stops showing its posts in the results of all search engines except Google. Moreover, the company stated that all AI companies should pay to use the platform’s content for training.
All such changes began to take place after the company went public in early 2024. The platform’s users were even encouraged to invest as the platform remained unprofitable.
