The vast majority of search engines no longer display the latest posts and comments that appear on the Reddit platform. This was reported by The Verge with reference to 404 Media.
The restriction of access to content posted on Reddit has been observed for several weeks now. However, it has not affected all search engines, but only those that do not pay for it.
For example, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and other alternative systems no longer display fresh results. The situation with Google is different: it is currently the only major search engine that shows new results in response to the site:reddit.com query.
This state of affairs is attributed to the fact that Reddit has entered into an agreement with Google to provide its content for training the tech giant’s artificial intelligence models. The contract is estimated at $60 million per year. However, Reddit denies the possible connection.
“This is not at all related to our recent partnership with Google,” Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt says in a statement to The Verge. “We have been in discussions with multiple search engines. We have been unable to reach agreements with all of them, since some are unable or unwilling to make enforceable promises regarding their use of Reddit content, including their use for AI.”
By the way, in the spring of 2024, OpenAI announced a partnership with Reddit. It provides access to the platform’s API, which will allow ChatGPT to use the information and content of its users.
