Sony increased its operating profit by 10% in the first quarter of the new fiscal year, which began in April. This was driven by growth in the gaming and music businesses, as well as the image sensor business, CNBC reports.
The company’s operating profit reached 279.11 billion yen ($1.9 billion). It was higher than analysts’ forecasts, who expected operating profit of 275.35 billion yen. Sony’s revenue amounted to 3.01 trillion yen ($20.5 billion) against the expected 2.8 trillion yen.
The gaming segment generated 864.9 billion yen in revenue for Sony. This is a 12% increase compared to the same period last fiscal year, when revenue amounted to 771.9 billion yen.
Meanwhile, Sony’s music and image sensor divisions saw revenues grow by 23% and 21%, respectively. The music division of the giant, in particular, received a boost from the release of Beyoncé’s new album “Cowboy Carter,” which increased its performance.
Earlier, Sony announced that its operating profit in fiscal 2023 decreased by 7% compared to the previous year due to weaker results of the financial division.
