HMD has announced the Better Phone, a new project in which the company is working with parents to develop a smartphone that will be designed specifically for children and protect their mental health.
The company is working on a new phone that will become an alternative to smartphones for children. This device will give parents the opportunity to control the time spent by their children on the smartphone screen and social networks.
Among other things, HMD is also working with a number of experts, campaigners, and parental support groups to better understand what solutions are actually needed. All of them will be involved in global webinars and forums to ensure collaboration and co-creation within the Better Phone project.
The company also commissioned a global study to gain insight into the dilemmas of parents whose children use smartphones. The results showed that 11 years old is the average age when children first get a smartphone, despite the fact that parents admit they would like to do it later.
A survey of 10,000 parents in the UK, the US, India, Germany, and Australia showed that most respondents regret giving their children a smartphone at such an early age. One third believes that smartphones have become a key cause of negative influence on children, particularly through social media.
70% of parents admitted that their childhood without smartphones gave them the opportunity to communicate more with their family, but now their children do not have such time. 55% of respondents say that children’s smartphone use is a source of serious disputes. Another third of parents have cried because of their children’s obsession with smartphones.
Despite this, more than half of parents agree that smartphones can have a positive impact on their children. It gives them the opportunity to keep in touch with friends and helps them with their studies. That is why HMD intends to create a smartphone that will enhance the positive impact of devices on children and reduce all the negative qualities.
