The Digital Marketplaces Act, which will come into force in the European Union on March 7, 2024, will allow Spotify to bring in-app purchases back to the iPhone app.

The Digital Markets Law will remove the 30% commission that Apple charges for each purchase made on the iPhone, which will finally allow the company to show the true price of subscriptions and audiobooks.

Back in 2016, Spotify removed the ability for new users to pay for their subscription using Apple devices, and last year it removed this option for users who subscribed before 2016.

The restrictions went so far that the company couldn’t even show how much the subscription costs or where it can be purchased in the iPhone app, but this will soon change for users in Europe.

The iPhone app will once again make it easy to subscribe, change plans, or buy audiobooks. The company will also allow creators to download apps for musicians and podcasters directly from their website.

The company plans to continue to fight with Apple to ensure that these restrictions cease to apply in all other regions, not just the EU.

“It should be this easy for every single Spotify customer everywhere. But if you live outside certain markets, you will continue to encounter frustrating roadblocks because of Apple’s ridiculous rules,” they wrote in the announcement.
