During the Wells Fargo TMT Summit, XBOX Chief Financial Officer Tim Stewart expressed an opinion on the possibility of distributing a free Game Pass plan with advertising. This was reported by VGC.

Stewart mentioned xCloud game streaming as one example of the spread of this model. According to him, a free plan can help expand this service in emerging markets.

“The vision I like to talk about is we have xCloud game streaming, so you can subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate and you can stream hundreds of games to really any endpoint that has a browser experience. For models like Africa, or India, Southeast Asia, maybe places that aren’t console-first, you can say, ‘hey, do you want to watch 30 seconds of an ad and then get two hours of game streaming?’

Last year, Microsoft already conducted a survey among users whether they would be willing to use a cheaper Game Pass plan, but with advertising.

However, despite Stewart’s statements and the company’s previous steps in this direction, there are no further details available. In particular, it is not known whether the free plan will work worldwide or only in certain markets.
