Remedy said in a letter to investors that it is restarting development of a free-to-play multiplayer shooter known as Project Vanguard.

In 2021, the company signed an agreement with Tencent to collaborate on the project, but due to the rapid development and growth of the multiplayer shooter market, it was decided to go in a different direction.

From now on, the project has a new codename – Kestrel, and the developers will return to the concept phase. Part of the team that worked on Vanguard will be redeployed to other projects, while the main leadership will remain working on Krestel.

Besides, it is reported that along with the relaunch, the developers have also abandoned the idea of distributing the game on a free-to-play model and will instead make it a paid game.

The new game will build more on the core strengths of Remedy and will be based on many of the features, assets, and themes already developed for Vanguard.

“We have made some great strides in free-to-play and multiplayer development in Vanguard. After a lot of careful consideration, we believe that taking on a new direction where the game will be built more around Remedy’s core competences is the right way to go. We are creating another distinct Remedy game with Tencent’s continued support in making a great cooperative multiplayer experience”, said Tero Virtala, the CEO of Remedy Entertainment.
