What’s up with Opel? It looks like a new affordable electric car…

This is reported by AUTOCAR: the main idea is to create an electric car that is one level below the existing electric version of the Corsa – but also one level cheaper. Opel’s new electric car should cost about 22 thousand pounds (about $25 thousand euros), which is 10 thousand pounds cheaper than the electric Corsa. But how can an affordable electric car be created from scratch?

It’s simple: Opel’s new electric car is likely to be the closest relative of the recently introduced Citroen e-C3. After all, everything is very similar: compact dimensions and a hatchback body, a small battery and an electric motor.

The STLA Small platform makes it possible to create small electric vehicles with not very outstanding, but quite sufficient characteristics. For example, it is possible to install batteries with a capacity of 37-82 kWh and electric motors with a capacity of 70 kW or about 95 “horses”. Such indicators are quite enough for a city electric vehicle, where the most important thing is not the range and power, but compactness and low cost.

If all goes according to plan, Opel’s new affordable electric car will be available in a few years and will compete with the Renault 5 and KIA EV2. And now add the aforementioned Citroen and Volkswagen ID.2, and it looks like we’re about to have a new competition of “electric babies”!
