One can only wonder how a relatively small company like Mazda allows itself to “play its own game” and create very interesting cars.

Okay, in this case it’s only the Mazda Iconic SP concept, but still – in its form we have a classic 2-door coupe with a rotary engine! Doesn’t it remind you of anything? And if you add retractable headlights and a long hood with the interior sliding back? This is the successor to the Mazda RX-7!

However, it is made in accordance with the realities of the time. Under the hood of the Mazda Iconic SP concept car, a two-section rotary engine is indeed installed, but it is used as a generator to generate electricity – which, accordingly, powers an electric motor with a capacity of 370 “horses”.

In addition, it is possible to recharge the intermediate battery and use the power plant only as a generator: for example, to power a house. And the rotary engine can run on hydrogen or other carbon-neutral fuel.

Inside the compact 4.18-meter coupe, you can see a new interior layout with a massive center tunnel and a sleek sports steering wheel. If you add two flat-panel displays, the interior layout of the Mazda Iconic SP concept suddenly resembles… but is it really Porsche?

Of course, the concept is not yet a production car. However, we want to believe that the Mazda Iconic SP will turn into a real sports coupe. After all, Mazda really knows how to surprise and launch very original cars.
