Apple has released watchOS 10, an operating system update for its smartwatches that offers a new visual design for various apps, a Smart Stack feature for displaying widgets, and a number of new watch faces. It also adds advanced features for cycling and hiking, mental health tools, and even the ability to measure time spent in daylight.

New design and Smart Stack

The update transforms the standard design of Apple Watch apps such as Weather, Stocks, Messages, Maps, and others. This is the biggest update to the watchOS interface in several years.

With the new release, the Apple Watch also gets the Smart Stack feature, which displays widgets that adapt to the user’s context and can be accessed by simply turning the digital crown from the watch face. For example, the Weather widget will display the weather forecast in the morning, and boarding passes from the wallet will appear when the user is at the airport.

Control center and navigation

The side button makes the Control Center even more accessible. Double-clicking on the digital crown allows users to quickly return to recently used apps.

New dials

watchOS 10 introduces five new watch faces: Snoopy, Palette, Solar Analog, Nike Globe, and Modular Ultra.

Each watch face offers unique interaction and data display capabilities – from playful animations on Snoopy to real-time data on Modular Ultra.

Features for cyclists

For cyclists, the update brings Bluetooth connectivity for power meters, speed sensors, and cadence sensors. The new metrics and training views are optimized for iPhone displays that can be mounted on the handlebars of your bike for easy viewing while you ride.

Compass and maps

The Compass application now automatically generates waypoints based on the last mobile connection and emergency calls, so the user can find a place where the operator’s network is available in case of emergency. There is also a new altitude display and topographic maps.

Mental health support

The Mindfulness app allows users to discreetly log their emotions and moods. These journals can be viewed in the Health app on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, providing valuable information about a person’s mental state.

Vision health

WatchOS 10 now has the ability to measure the time spent in daylight using a light sensor, which can be useful for reducing the risk of myopia.

Additional updates

The update also provides deeper integration with HomePod via UWB, offline maps, FaceTime video message playback, medication reminders, and more.

Features for businesses

For business customers, watchOS 10 introduces Mobile Device Management (MDM), which allows you to remotely install apps and set up accounts across multiple devices.

watchOS 10 is compatible with Apple Watch Series 4 and later and requires an iPhone Xs or later smartphone with iOS 17.
