Finally, we can confirm a lot of speculation around one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year, the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple’s planned presentation did not contain many surprises, but it was still quite interesting. So, here are the updates that the manufacturer is going to make users interested in this time.
Apple’s flagship smartphone is still available in two versions: iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. This time, there is no Ultra version. Both models retained the same screen diagonal (while retaining almost all other characteristics) as their predecessors, while reducing the bezels around them. This happened due to the changed body.
Thus, both versions of the iPhone 15 Pro have a matte titanium chassis that has replaced mirror steel. The shape of the case has also been minimally updated, with the bezel becoming slightly rounder. The physical dimensions of the new models are 146.6×70.6×9.25 mm and 159.9×76.7×8.25 mm, respectively. Compared to the previous versions, these are smaller but also thicker. At the same time, titanium helped reduce the weight to 187 and 221 grams (206 and 240 grams).
The color options were also affected by this update. Now all variants have the prefix Titanium, emphasizing the new material, where the Gold variant has “fallen out” of the pool. So now the choice is from: Natural Titanium, Blue Titanium, White Titanium, and Black Titanium. Subjectively, they all look good, although it’s hard to say that they are anything special this time (for example, the green iPhone 13 Pro was much more attractive, not to mention the prospects of the red one).
Among other notable points, the notification mode switcher, which is loved by many users, has been replaced by the new universal Action button. Of course, Apple is currently limiting its possible uses, so it can: change notification modes; enable Focus modes; activate the camera, voice memos, flashlight, translator, Shortcuts; and some accessibility features.
And how can we not mention USB-C? This year’s entire lineup of Apple smartphones has switched to using the new charging port format. However, the flagship models received a higher data transfer rate (up to 10 Gbps) and a direct connection to a computer for instant photo uploads during the shooting process (just like professional photographers with “adult” cameras do). No surprise, when this was mentioned during the presentation, the phrase “custom cable” was used.
Of course, the flagships have updated A17 Pro processors (although they used to have a Bionic ending). These are 3-nanometer chips with 19 billion transistors, which consist of the same 2+4 CPU cores, 16 Neural Engine cores, separate blocks for video processing, and even a dedicated USB controller for the “new” connector. The graphics accelerator has 6 cores (there were 5) and a separate Ray Tracing support for presentation. Moreover, the Neural Engine should help with graphics processing. The company promises that in the near future, iPhone will have games that were previously available only for PCs and consoles (no, you shouldn’t expect Starfield on iPhone yet).
To the satellite communication capabilities, the Roadside Assistance option has been added, which will allow you to call for help in case of problems while traveling by car if there is no cellular network. The new iPhones also have an improved ambient noise reduction option, which should improve phone calls in noisy places.
There are both changes and differences in the cameras between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Let’s start with the common cameras. The main 48-megapixel sensor will now offer 24- or 48-megapixel photos, and at the same time, options with focal lengths of 24, 28, and 35 mm. The 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera also has a macro mode. Additionally, the two cameras can work simultaneously to record Spatial video, which can then be viewed on Apple Vision Pro with the appropriate immersive effect. Also, the new iPhone models can record video in ProRes format in 4K at 60 FPS, not 30.
Where the most dramatic changes have occurred is in the third camera. In both cases, these are 12-megapixel sensors, but in the iPhone 15 Pro it is the usual sensor with 3x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a new “tetraprismatic” sensor with 5x optical zoom (equivalent to 120 mm), and better 3D sensor-shift stabilization.
As for autonomy, Apple has said virtually nothing about it. The website states that the new models should “stay” at the level of the previous ones.
Lastly, we discussed prices and storage. Here we found a mix of different insights, which settled on the fact that the iPhone 15 Pro starts at the usual $999 and 128 GB, but the iPhone 15 Pro’s starting price has risen to $1,199, but the storage of this model starts at 256 GB (the same as its predecessor with the corresponding amount of permanent memory).
