American scientists have discovered a mysterious small object at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. So far, they have not been able to determine what it is, but the discovery has already been dubbed a “golden egg” and a “golden ball”, writes Psyh.org.

The object was found off the coast of Alaska last week using a remotely operated vehicle at a depth of about 3,300 meters. The diameter of the find is more than 10 cm, and it has a small hole at the base.

“As cameras zoomed in, scientists were stumped as to its identification, with initial thoughts ranging from a dead sponge attachment, to coral, to an egg casing,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a statement.

While social media discusses the object and even admits its extraterrestrial origin, scientists have obtained an “egg” for future research.

“While we were able to collect the ‘golden orb’ and bring it onto the ship, we still are not able to identify it beyond the fact that it is biological in origin,” NOAA said.

Although scientists are puzzled by the mysterious object, they are convinced that it is an extra reminder of how little humanity knows about its own planet and how much more there is to learn about the ocean.
