Microsoft is sending pop-ups to some users suggesting that they replace Google’s default search engine with Microsoft Bing in the Chrome browser, writes The Verge.
According to the author of the publication, he became one of these users. His main computer is running Windows 11. A pop-up window appeared after using the specified browser and suggested the presence of malware on the computer.
“Stunningly, Microsoft now thinks it’s ok to shove a pop-up in my face above my apps and games just because I dare to use Chrome instead of Microsoft Edge,” the author wrote.
According to him, the notification he received is not normal and is not related to the Windows 11 section that offers new features. This file literally appeared in the c:\windows\temp\mubstemp folder and has a digital signature from Microsoft.
“We are aware of these reports and have paused this notification while we investigate and take appropriate action to address this unintended behavior,” says Caitlin Roulston, director of communications, in a statement to The Verge.
By the way, Microsoft is preparing to reduce the number of features in the new version of the Edge web browser. These include the Math Problem Solver, Picture Dictionary, Quotes, Grammar Tools, and Kids Mode.
