As part of the “Made in India” initiative, the country’s total production of mobile phones in 2014-2022 crossed the 2 billion mark. This is stated in the report Counterpoint Technology.

The estimates also show an average annual growth rate of 23%. It was driven by strong domestic demand, increased digital literacy, and government support. Various programs were introduced to increase local production and added value. As a result, India became the second largest mobile phone manufacturing country.

“We have seen local manufacturing increase over the years to meet domestic demand. In 2022, more than 98% of shipments in the overall Indian market (within the initiative – ed.) were ‘Made in India’, compared to just 19% when the current government took over in 2014”, Research Director of Counterpoint Tarun Pathak said.

He added that many companies are setting up mobile phone and component manufacturing units in the country, leading to increased investments, more jobs and overall ecosystem development. The government intends to use various schemes to make India a “semiconductor manufacturing and export hub”.

“Going forward, we may see increasing production, especially for smartphones, as India gears to bridge the urban-rural digital divide and also become a mobile phone exporting powerhouse,” Tarun Pathak emphasized.

As a reminder, the Indian government initiated a competition to develop Indian browsers. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced a browser development competition to encourage local talent and reduce the country’s dependence on foreign-developed browsers.
